Public benefits
The direct benefits flowing from the charitable purposes are: through its support of research into pancreatic cancer (PC), the Charity will increase the volume & range of research into this disease. This will save lives as new treatments and procedures are developed and integrated into medical services, improving their efficacy & effectiveness.
The Charity’s public information work, increasing awareness of PC & the recognition of symptoms, and the importance of early diagnosis, will save lives by encouraging people to seek early treatment. Providing support and assistance to the families affected by pancreatic cancer will help them to understand the nature and progression of the illness and provide them with a supportive network to refer to when stressed. Those affected and their families can speak to supporters who have themselves direct experience pancreatic cancer, allowing them to ask questions which are sometimes difficult to articulate in a medical professional setting – thus promoting their peace of mind. The Charity’s educational work will make medical and healthcare professionals and the wider public more aware of the symptoms of pancreatic and act promptly when they are recognised to seek appropriate treatment. As survival rates are significantly improved by early diagnosis & intervention, this education feeds directly benefit those affected. It will also promote the advancement of understanding of pancreatic cancer amongst medical/health professions, as the Charity’s contribution to research benefits researchers in their understanding of their specialist fields. Such research will also percolate out into the wider health service to increase the awareness and understanding of front-line service providers and thus promote early recognition and diagnosis. The benefits identified can be demonstrated through: • A greater % of the population will be aware of the symptoms and seek early medical advice, shown through surveys and more early referrals to GPs; • Awareness raising with medical/health professions will increase early referral rates to specialist services. More patients will receive timely & effective procedures, increasing their prospects recovery or a longer period of good health; • Funded research will improve the efficacy & effectiveness of diagnosis and treatments. Whilst the Charity will be one of a number of research funders, the overall effect will be a significant increase in survival rates & much improved treatments; • Work with the families of PC sufferers will help them to cope with stress and offer a ready source of advice & support. This will benefit the person affected by reducing tension at home, & help the families to gain a realistic understanding of the possible outcome & to build better memories where time is limited. There is no harm arising from the purposes. The beneficiaries are those patients with pancreatic cancer in Northern Ireland and their families and the general public; professionals working in medical and clinical environments to make them aware of pancreatic cancer to help their patients and their own knowledge; researchers and those working towards treatments and elimination of pancreatic cancer There is a private benefit, in that the professionals and researchers will gain knowledge that will improve their medical and professional knowledge for their own benefit but this is incidental and necessary.
