Public benefits

The direct benefits of the purpose of the charity are the advancement of education and the advancement of health or the saving of lives. The fund promotes and increases individual and collective knowledge and understanding of areas of pharmacy and its positive effect on the health care of the general public and future generations. This is a

direct result of individuals/groups of individuals receiving bursaries, allowances or research grants. Knowledge is advanced and disseminated throughout the healthcare sector for the benefit of all. The community at large benefits from the research conducted, resulting in a healthier population. The benefits are demonstrated through reporting of activities and funding in the Annual Report which is laid before the NI Assembly, through reporting at the AGMs, through reporting from the beneficiary on how the funding was spent and through the exchange of research findings with the profession. There is no harm arising from the purpose of the charity. The individuals receiving the grants, bursaries or allowances to expand education and research for the public good eg antibiotics, opioids etc. The general public are beneficiaries as a result of the advanced education research conducted as the health and wellbeing of the population increases Any private flowing from the purpose of the charity is entirely incidental - for example the person carrying out research may enhance their employment prospects because of the project they have been involved in and the experience they gained.

What your organisation does

The C.W. Young Charitable Trust was set up in memory of Charles William Young, Head of Department of Pharmacy in Belfast College of Technology from 1929-1960. He was a passionate educator and the remit of the fund is to promote and advance the development of pharmacy, for the public benefit, in Northern Ireland by supporting the education,

acquisition of knowledge and furtherance of research in Northern Ireland. This is achieved through the award of scholarships, bursaries or maintenance allowances to such persons to enable them for the public benefit to advance their study and knowledge of pharmacy by involvement in research projects as determined by the Trustees. This research is carried out in order that it increase the wellbeing of all individuals within Northern Ireland and further afield.

Charitable purposes

The Trust is established to promote and advance by charitable means the development of pharmacy in Northern Ireland by supporting the education , acquisition of knowledge, and furtherance of research in Northern Ireland, by the provision of scholarships, bursaries and maintenance allowances to such scholars, pharmacists and students engaged in study or research in the discipline of pharmacy based at Queen's University Belfast, or by such of the same or such other means as the Trustees may from time to time decide PROVIDED ALWAYS that no portion of the Trust Fund, after the payment of any expenses of administration, shall be applied either directly or indirectly for any object or purpose which is not Charitable
