Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from purpose 1 include an improvement in the social life of those participating in shed activities. The direct benefits which flow from purpose 2 include the improved mental and physical health of all participants in shed activities. Direct benefits which flow from purpose 3 include an improvement in skills

development within the community and better social interaction. The direct benefits which flow from purpose 4 include involvement of people from the community in worthwhile social activities. These benefits will be demonstrated through regular feedback received from shed members and the local public. For purpose 2 the benefits will be demonstrated through information provided by shed members and their families and carers. Benefits from purpose 3 will be evidenced through feedback from shed members and contacts in the community. For purpose 4 benefits are demonstrated through frequent evaluation by our Committee of our ongoing programme as well as through feedback from participants. Purpose 1 may lead to a risk of harm from the use of certain tools and equipment in the shed, but we can show that this risk is minimal and is taken care of through our health and safety policy. We do not envisage any harm flowing from purpose 2. Purpose 3 may lead to the possibility of harm through injury sustained in using tools and equipment, but we can show that any such risk is minimal, can be dealt with through our health and safety policy and is outweighed by the benefits accruing through shed activities. Although there is a small possibility of harm arising as a result of purpose 4 due to the use of tools and equipment, this risk is outweighed by the benefits which will accrue. The charity's beneficiaries are those people in our community who will benefit from the opportunity to connect with others in a social setting. The private benefit that flows from purposes 1,3 and 4 is any profit which a supplier of equipment and materials receives from dealing with the shed, but this is incidental and necessary because of the need to provide activities for shed members. There is no private benefit flowing from purpose 2.

What your organisation does

The Men’s Shed offers local men a facility where they can come at a time of their own choosing either to sit or talk, just relax or involve themselves in some of our activities. We have a range of woodworking, painting and decorating, and gardening activities which are carried out within the community. This allows these individuals to escape

from loneliness and isolation and to improve their physical and mental health by simply meeting with others, working for the good of the community, getting involved in small local projects and thus improving both their physical and social skills. We also offer talks on various health topics and encourage our members to look after their own health and the health of other members of our group. We offer gentle physical exercises, promote the benefits of walking, gardening and woodworking and by so doing benefit the individuals themselves, our own group, other local community groups and the wider community in the Ballinascreen area and beyond.
