Public benefits
The direct benefits flowing from our purposes are increased access to specialist therapy not generally available to children and young people in Ireland. This leads to improved physical abilities and to participants developing better fitness levels, leading to better general health, more independent lives and hopefully suffering from less pain and
discomfort. Potentially participants will require less corrective surgery during their lifetimes. These benefits will be evidenced by using before and after evaluations of physical abilities for each user of our services. Qualified therapists will administer tests for a range of measures such as ranges of joint movement, number of repetitions of certain activities, distances walked and other functional measures of physical ability. We will also conduct parent and child evaluations of each service we offer. We will research existing evidence to assess approaches more generally and to benchmark our own effectiveness. We will design and conduct our own research with the help of local Universities. The purposes of our charity could potentially lead to the following harm being caused. As with any physical activity, therapy can result in injuries occurring. The children attending can have complex dietary and medical needs which need careful management to ensure harm does not occur. We feel that by assessing all participants for suitability before starting a program of therapy and carefully managing all risks we can reduce the likelihood and severity of any harm that may occur. Given this we feel that the potential benefits offered far outweigh any risks of potential harm. Children and young people who are affected by motor difficulties caused by neurological injury or impairment, most commonly Cerebral Palsy, who live in Ireland. A potential private benefit may occur where the children of Trustees attend therapy provided by the charity. In such cases the fees payable and access to services is the same as for all other participants and where conflicts of interest may occur, special voting arrangements are in place and open to scrutiny by the wider membership community to ensure all conduct is appropriate and fair. A private benefit will also flow from our purposes as a number of individuals will be employed by the organisation to provide our programs of therapy. It is essential that we obtain the services of highly qualified and experienced therapists supported by a sufficiently large team of trained support workers. We may have to pay venues or clinics for their services where required. We may also have to pay for or share the cost of research programs with researchers and Universities. All benefits are reasonable, incidental and necessary to achieve our stated purposes and to reduce any risk of causing harm.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
We aim to offer children and young people from anywhere in Ireland access to evidence based neuro-rehabilitation services. We will either bring qualified practitioners to Ireland and organise schools to provide therapies locally or we may deliver signposting services and facilitate travel to foreign clinics where this is more appropriate. We
currently run an annual summer school based in North Down which provides physical therapy based on the Andras Peto method also known as Conductive Education. In addition to providing opportunities for Physical development we also provide a range of outings and activities that improve Emotional and Social development as well. This program helps attendees to build confidence as they gain a better understanding of their abilities and develop a range of problem solving techniques to use in everyday tasks beyond the end of the program. We will conduct research into the effectiveness of various therapies and try to promote a wider understanding and adoption of these therapies by main stream health providers throughout Ireland.
