Public benefits
Direct benefits: Providing local news in audio format to people who can no longer read print helps members keep in touch with what is going on locally and feel connected to their local community. This knowledge gives them confidence to take part in and have an opinion on everyday topics of local interest. This encourages increased social
interaction and helps individuals feel part of their local community. The weekly information we provide increases opportunities for people to get out and feel confident about participating in a range of social and community activities. Benefits can be demonstrated: We know from feedback the support and information provided through our Talking Newspaper service is invaluable. It keeps people connected and as a result provides more choices for our listeners to participate in a range of community activities. It has been well documented how people with sight loss experience social isolation. Many of our members live alone and without our service have reported they would feel more isolated. There is no harm arising from our purposes. Our beneficiaries are adults who are blind or partially sighted and living in Omagh and surrounding area who wish to receive Talking Newspaper. Private benefit: Some of our committee members receive Omagh & District Talking Newspaper.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
Omagh & District Talking Newspaper has been providing a Talking Newspaper service in Omagh and surrounding area for many years. Our aim is to provide people who are visually impaired with audio recordings of local news chiefly from the two local weekly newspapers: Tyrone Constitution and the Ulster Herald. We may also receive news items for
inclusion from individuals, local groups and organisations. We rely on a small number of enthusiastic volunteers who meet regularly to record items from local newspapers, copy and distribute to over seventy listeners. We send out the weekly recordings on memory sticks, serving our listeners with stories and information from Omagh and surrounding area. Once listened to the USB is returned in a post free pouch and upon receipt of this the listener will receive the next edition of the Talking Newspaper. There is no charge for this service. We will send the talking newspaper to anyone who requests it, who is registered with a local authority as blind or partially sighted, or is certified by an optician or doctor as being unable to read N12 print.
