Public benefits
The public benefits which flow from purpose (a) are the advancement of the arts and culture and the advancement of education. Our work introduces local people to new and imaginative high quality arts experiences that make a positive impact on their lives and encourages local children and their families to take an interest in a type of cultural
experience in which many of them were previously not involved. The benefits are evidenced by surveys of individual and group attendees, demographic mapping, regular evaluations and reporting of our work to various funding bodies. The public benefits which flow from purpose (b) are the advancement of the arts and culture, the advancement of education, the relief of those in need by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability and financial hardship, the advancement of citizenship and promotion of diversity and equality. Our Arts Development Programmes create meaningful opportunities for those most disadvantaged in our society to develop personal, social and educational skills. The Diversity Projects promote intercultural dialogue and cross-community respect, enhance social cohesion and strengthen peace by integrating young people from ethnic minority groups with indigenous Catholics and Protestants. The Disability Projects encourage and support young people with physical, learning and sensory disabilities to get involved in the arts on their own terms. Participation on these programmes builds young people’s confidence and develops their social skills, leading to participation and integration in mainstream activity, which enhances social cohesion and ultimately improves the well-being and quality of life of this most disadvantaged group. The Arts and Older People Projects give isolated older people living in areas of high deprivation, rural areas and care home settings the opportunity to participate in meaningful activity to ensure that they remain productive, useful and contributing members of society. The projects decrease loneliness, boredom and depression while increasing participants’ self-esteem. The benefits are evidenced by surveys carried out with participants, parents and carers, demographic mapping, regular evaluations and reporting of our work to various funding bodies. The public benefits which flow from purpose (c) are the advancement of the arts and culture, the relief of those in need by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability and financial hardship and promotion of diversity and equality. Waterside Theatre is located in an area of economic deprivation, historically suffering from a lack of public investment and to this day remains the only permanent arts facility in an area of 38,000 people. Our work provides first access to theatre facilities for the local population and through our Arts Development Programmes (detailed above) we engage with the most disadvantaged groups in society (young people with disabilities, young people from ethnic minority backgrounds and/or areas of socio-economic disadvantage and marginalised older people) to build participants confidence and self-esteem, develop social skills, tackle issues including poverty, loneliness, boredom and depression, promote equality and diversity and enhance social cohesion. The benefits are evidenced by surveys carried out with participants, parents and carers, demographic mapping, regular evaluations and reporting of our work to various funding bodies. No harm arises from the organisation’s purposes. The beneficiaries of all our purposes are members of the public off all ages, abilities, race, religions and socio-economic backgrounds, local artists, community and cultural organisations, schools, residential care homes, as well as public bodies including the local authority and health board. No private benefit arises from the organisation’s purposes.
