Public benefits

The board of PPI-NI believe that the organisations purpose satisfy both elements of the public benefit requirement. The direct benefits which flow from PPI-NI's purpose are: - Increased mutual respect and understanding among children and young people (aged 7-20yrs) from different backgrounds in Northern Ireland. - Improved knowledge of concepts

surrounding and leading to conflict. - Increased opportunities for interaction among children and young people from different parts of our community. - Children and young people are equipped to be leaders in their communities and beyond. - Strengthened self-esteem among children and young people. - Greater willingness among public organisations to use sport as a tool to engage in cross-community activities. These benefits are evidenced through implementation of PPI-NI's internal monitoring and evaluation plan which captures both quantitative (monitoring information; attendance data; and surveys with participants, parents and teachers) and qualitative data (focus groups; stakeholder interviews; and coaches observations). PPI-NI has worked closely with the Institute for Conflict Research (ICR) to evaluate the impact of its programmes. PPI-NI will continue to work with ICR to independently verify its internal M&E. The possibility of harm, for example, by physical injury incurred by participation in sports activities, is outweighed by the benefit and significantly reduced by the policies and procedures in place to address such risks, for example safeguarding and child protection policy, health and safety policy, code of conduct for staff and volunteers. There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose. The primary beneficiaries of PPI-NI's work are children and young people aged 7-20yrs.

What your organisation does

PeacePlayers International Northern Ireland (PPI-NI) uses sport, specifically the game of basketball, to unite young people from historically divided parts of the community in Northern Ireland. PPI-NI’s work in Northern Ireland, as in all of the PeacePlayers sites around the world, is based on the simple yet powerful premise that “children who

play together can learn to live together”. We use the game of basketball to build deep, lasting friendships among young people from communities with histories of conflict. To truly transform the status quo in communities with histories of violence, PPI-NI emphasises the pursuit of shared goals and relationship building over a prolonged period of frequent interaction. We teach our participants how to understand the dynamics that lead to conflict, how to overcome conflict, and how to share their knowledge with others. PPI-NI not only prepares its participants to become leaders of PPI-NI programs upon “graduation,” but we also expect young people to leave our program ready to take on leadership roles knowing how to take the skills they have learned on the court and apply it to all aspects of their lives. We use the public nature of sport to illustrate the potential for cooperation to the broader community. By proactively partnering with public, private, and international bodies in pursuit of shared goals, PPI-NI aims to leverage its impact in support of society-wide change.
