Public benefits
Stewartstown Amateur Dramatic Society is established for the advancement of education, the advancement and promotion of arts and culture and the promotion of the benefit of the community resident in the Stewartstown area and its environs of Co. Tyrone, in particular but not exclusively by associating community and voluntary organisations and the
inhabitants in a common effort to advance education and promote the arts with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said beneficiaries and in particular to: (a) to foster, promote and advance the education of the beneficiaries in theatre and performance art in all its aspects, and to encourage appreciation for and participation in cross-cultural community based arts activities by the provision of information and training, classes, workshops, facilities and equipment, support and instruction and the organisation of exhibitions of plays, performance, works and events as the Committee shall decide in accordance with the law of charity in their absolute discretion determine; The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include increased education and knowledge in the workings of a theatre, increased knowledge and understanding of music and dance, the learning of new acting skills, increased knowledge and understanding of artwork required in scenery making, theatrical make-up, costume making etc. These benefits can be demonstrated by the annual production of nine shows in the Burnavon Theatre, Cookstown with a total audience of over 2500 each year. (b) to advance education particularly but not exclusively by the encouragement and promotion of works and performances for young people in branches of arts, including the arts of drama, performance, mime, dance, singing and music; The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include increased confidence of performers, appreciation of the necessity and the benefits of working together as a group, the understanding that each person must rely on others if they are to achieve their aim, therefore they learn to trust people who are perhaps from a different background. These benefits can be demonstrated by the harmony and unity of the group after the completion of the shows. A feeling of confidence and pride, which is reflected in well beyond the bounds of the theatre but in the community from which they have come. Obviously in choosing characters, music and in making costumes and scenery, decisions have to be made which not everyone likes. We can show that this is outweighed by the benefits through the obvious enjoyment expressed by the cast and the many more working in the background at the end of a successful run of shows. The charity’s beneficiaries are the actors, musicians and all those who work behind the scenes (over 100 in total from a village of 600 people)after a successful run of shows; the general public who come to watch; Bunavon Arts and Cultural Centre, those theatre is filled in January, the general population of Stewartstown who take a pride in what can be achieved by people in a small village working together. The only private benefit flowing from the purpose is income from advertising and ticket sales and this is incidental and necessary because we use it to fund next season's pantomime.
