Public benefits

The purposes of East Antrim University of the Third Age are to advance the education of the public and in particular the education of older people no longer in full time gainful employment in East Antrim including the Boroughs of Newtownabbey, Larne and Carrickfergus. Membership of East Antrim U3A enhances the lives of retired people in Boroughs

of Newtownabbey, Larne and Carrickfergus, through providing learning opportunities at minimal cost and by widening social contact thus improving mental and physical well being of 3rd Agers. According to a recent survey carried out in the UK of 2,800 U3A members, U3A membership had improved their social life by 67% given them a new interest 54% enhanced their interest 66% improved their physical and mental health 33% gave them new skills 18% enhanced existing skills 25% Direct beneficiaries are the Third Agers who have been enabled to join the 24 U3As in Northern Ireland. There are no age restrictions, but most of the members are 50+. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. Trustees are all members of U3A so might be deemed to have an incidental and necessary non financial benefit as a result of their involvement as committee members of East Antrim U3A.

What your organisation does

East Antrim U3A have a comprehensive programme, both educational and social is available to all retired and semi retired people, within the East Antrim district. These interest groups include: French, Spanish, Reading, various Walking groups, Art, Crafts, Family History, Gardening, and more, and are open to all members. These interests and shared

learning experiences, enhance the quality of life and is available at minimum cost to all retired and semi retired residing in East Antrim.

Charitable purposes

The Objects of The EAU3A reflect those of the national U3A organisation, namely: a. to advance the education of the public and in particular the education of older people no longer in full time gainful employment in East Antrim and surrounding localities. b. The provision of facilities for leisure time and recreational activities with the object of improving the conditions of life for the above persons in the interests of their social wellbeing.
