Public benefits

Only 7% of the world’s 7,100 languages and dialects currently have the complete Bible and the Society wants everyone to be able to access Scripture in their heart language, so that they can experience its life-giving truth for their spiritual growth and development. The Bible Society in Northern Ireland partners with Churches, mission agencies and

individuals to encourage the appreciation and use of Scripture in Northern Ireland. It also raises funds in Northern Ireland for specific Bible translation or Bible distribution projects in more than 45 other countries each year. Bible Society in Northern Ireland grants are given to selected projects that will: (a) Undertake first-time translations of Scripture into a local language; (b) Enable fresh translations to be printed, published and distributed in both print and digital formats; (c) Distribute Scripture to people in a format that they can use, suitable to their specific needs eg Children' editions, Large Print editions for the Elderly, Braille volumes for those with visual impairment, Sign Language DVDs for those with a hearing impediment, and a range of resources for those who are illiterate (Faith Comes By Hearing listening groups, literacy training workshops or access to personal digital players). Most distribution projects are heavily subsidised through funds provided by the Bible Society in Northern Ireland to meet the needs of those who live in poverty and who could therefore never afford their own personal copy of Scripture. All projects are assessed on the basis of the specific proposal created by the Implementing Bible Society, and each is subject to regular reports on progress. No remuneration is paid to any member of the Board of Trustees, nor to any Volunteer, in return for their contribution to the Society’s work; similarly no special privileges are available to them nor to members of staff (beyond staff remuneration in line with national salary scales) that would constitute a private benefit. The Society’s work does not include any theological interpretation or teaching of Scripture that might risk creating harm for any section of the community, at home or abroad, where there was a variance in beliefs or teaching that they maintained when set beside the Society’s activities, publications or standards. The Society also complies with all statutory standards to preserve a safe environment for the public to come into Bible House in order to seek resources.

What your organisation does

Each year, staff from the Bible Society in Northern Ireland: (a) Speak to 60 - 80 church audiences to inform them about the purposes and progress of the Society's ministry, and to encourage them in their personal study of Scripture; (these events take place in the form of Sunday Church Services or Midweek meetings;) (b) Provide around 40 electronic

Prayer letters (each goes to up to 1400 people on each occasion; (c) Provide three Supporter magazines to around 12,000 supporters to report back on how their financial support has been used; (d) Circulate 4 Direct Mail publications to invite financial support for selected projects; (e) Provide a table-top Prayer calendar for members of our Bible-A-Month Prayer Partnership; (f) Provide Scripture resources to churches and individuals, some of which are on a free basis; (g) Provide access to further resources on the Bible Society's website for free download; (h) Provide a small Scripture supply service with a stock covering 15 English texts and also 70 non-English languages, all at subsidised prices, to make them as accessible as possible; (i) Commission the printing of Scripture products to meet the needs of a specific identified group eg Polish people who have come to live in Northern Ireland, or child-friendly Scripture editions for a project in local Primary schools which are provided as a gift; (j) Provide a service which will place Scripture in another country to the precise specification of a church or individual donor from Northern Ireland. All of these services are designed to promote Scripture access and use and to encourage people to discover the Holy Scriptures' life-changing power.
