Public benefits

Public Benefit Statement Purposes 1. To provide emotional and practical support to children and young people living with heart disease, and their families in Northern Ireland. 2. To advance and promote awareness of heart disease in children and young people within Northern Ireland 3. To support medical resources and research in the area of heart

disease in children and young people Public Benefit Statement The Directors believe that our purposes satisfy both elements of the public benefit requirement. Purpose one. The direct benefits which flow from purpose 1 include reduced levels of stress and anxiety and the provision of comfort and support services. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from patients and families and independent evaluation of our services by the Belfast Trust paediatric cardiac liaison team. This purpose does not give rise to any harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are children and young people living with heart disease. They also include family members and carers of those children and young people diagnosed with heart disease. A private benefit flowing from this purpose is that gained by Directors who have a family member with heart disease and who access our family support programme. Directors in this circumstance apply for all our assigned support in the same way as all other beneficiaries. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. Purpose two. The direct benefits which flow from purpose 2 are the promotion of health awareness about heart disease in children and young people and increased awareness about the impact of heart disease on this group in wider society. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from patients and families, and an independent media monitoring service. This purpose does not give rise to any harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are children and young people living with heart disease. They also include family members and carers of those children and young people diagnosed with heart disease. There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose. Purpose three The direct benefits which flow from purpose 3 include improved health and lifestyle outcomes for children and young people living with heart disease, and provision of equipment and facilities to help clincians carry out their work. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from patient and families, and independent evaluation of our services from the Belfast Trust paediatric and adult congenital cardiac clinical teams. This purpose does not give rise to any harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are children and young people living with heart disease in Northern Ireland. A private benefit flowing from this purpose is payment of, or payment to, clinical or research personnel by the charity, and improving their professional development. The payment confers a private benefit on such persons, but this is necessary and incidental in advancing the charity’s purposes

What your organisation does

The Children’s Heartbeat Trust delivers emotional and practical support to children and young people with heart disease in Northern Ireland, and their families. We do this by; 1. Financial support for Clark Clinic at the RBHSC: Clark Clinic is Northern Ireland’s only regional unit for children that need specialist treatment for heart conditions.

The Children’s Heartbeat Trust helps fund top quality medical equipment and pioneering medical initiatives to ensure that children and young people with heart disease in Northern Ireland receive the best care and treatment possible in an age-appropriate environment. 2. Accommodation at the RBHSC: We maintain accommodation directly above Clark Clinic for parents to stay in when their child is being treated. This allows parents to stay at the hospital in comfortable surroundings, in what is often a traumatic time. 3. Family Support Groups and Services: Family Support Groups are set up throughout the province to provide local support. Through regular groups led by volunteer family coordinators, heart families have the opportunity to meet other families who are experiencing similar issues and problems. The charity also runs a teenage support programme to give teenagers with heart disease the opportunity to meet other teens facing similar lifestyle matters. The charity develops and delivers a range of family support services, from counselling to music therapy to first aid training. These services also include tailored support for families during their child’s treatment and care. 4. Research into heart disease in children: We aim to fund and support research into the causes and treatment of heart disease in children. This research will improve health and lifestyle outcomes for children and young people living with heart disease. 5. Campaigning: Children’s Heartbeat Trust campaigns on policy issues that will improve outcomes and lifestyle for children and young people with heart disease.
