Public benefits
Abaana Ministries meets the public benefit requirement by the prevention/relief of poverty through the advancement of education, and also the advancement of religion. a) The advancement of education Abaana Ministries funds both the building of primary schools and educational costs of children through child sponsorship. The sponsorship pays for
school fees, materials such as exercise books, pens/pencils, a uniform each year and basic medical treatment. The direct benefits include a much greater opportunity of securing employment, earning a wage, which in turn will help them, and very often, also their families, escape from the ‘cycle of poverty’. This is of direct benefit to their local communities/wider society. The direct benefits are demonstrated through regular evaluation of services and feedback from children and their families. This evaluation and provision of feedback is prepared in conjunction with our partners in Uganda. This purpose does not lead to harm. The beneficiaries are those children and young people who are sponsored or who go to the schools set up by Abaana Ministries, their families and as a result wider society. There is no private benefit. b) The prevention or relief of poverty Abaana Ministries not only seeks to prevent and relieve poverty through education but the schools also serve as focal points for local communities and as sources of fresh drinking water, through the provision of wells and water pumps. Abaana also works with other agencies to help children living rough on the streets of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. It provides safe and secure accommodation in its children’s homes, who had previously been living rough on the streets in severe poverty. The long term goal is for the children to be happily resettled with family or relatives. The direct benefits from this purpose include the relief of poverty, the greatly enhanced opportunities of those receiving education to secure employment and earn a wage, which in turn can help them escape the cycle of poverty. Individuals also benefit from the provision of clean drinking water at a local point which helps to ensure that they do not fall ill from drinking contaminated water and do not have to travel long distances. Further the secure accommodation provided by Abaana Ministries in its Children’s Homes means that children who were living on the streets are safe and may then go on to break out of the ‘cycle of poverty’. The direct benefits are demonstrated through regular evaluation of services and feedback from children and their families. This evaluation and provision of feedback is prepared in conjunction with our partners in Uganda. This purpose does not lead to harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are those children, young people and the local communities who benefit from the provision of education, the establishment of clean drinking water at a local point or the help given to those living on the streets. There is no private benefit. c) The advancement of religion Through the advancement of education and the prevention and relief of poverty Abaana Ministries have an opportunity to carry out missionary and outreach work raising awareness and understanding of the Christian faith promoting belief in its principles. The direct benefits from this purpose include the advancement of the Christian faith and the belief in its principles in Uganda by raising awareness and understanding.
