Public benefits
The Advancement of Education The management of St Oliver Plunkett Youth Club believe that our purpose satisfies both elements of the public benefit requirement for the advancement of education. The direct benefit which flows from this purpose is the informal provision of educational programmes for young people aged 9-25 from the Crossmaglen and
surrounding area. These programmes include, but are not limited to, drugs and alcohol awareness, cultural awareness, disability awareness, healthy cooking, training for volunteers, outdoor education, and life skills. The beneficiaries of our charity are the young people aged 9-25 from the Crossmaglen and surrounding area. These benefits can be demonstrated through surveys taken by the young people, their parents, and evaluations from the programmes. The public benefit of this is the development of the beneficiaries’ own individual capabilities, competences, skills and understanding. A private benefit may arise from staff members who are paid a wage but these benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. The Advancement of citizenship or community development The management of St Oliver Plunkett Youth Club believe that our purpose satisfies both elements of the public benefit requirement for the advancement of community development. St Oliver Plunkett Youth Club raises awareness of the need to develop community involvement. This is achieved by providing the opportunity for young people ages 9-25 to volunteer at the club and carry out many activities, including but not limited to, bag packing, road collections and summer schemes. On some occasions young people help other sections of the community within Crossmaglen and the surrounding area, for example volunteering with a local luncheon club for senior citizens. The charities beneficiaries are the young people of Crossmaglen and the surrounding area who enjoy the safe and friendly environment which the club has to offer. This is documented by the many young people who volunteer and take part in activities on a weekly basis. A private benefit to beneficiaries may arise from ongoing training in assisting the community. Through this training the young people aged 9-25 from Crossmaglen and the surrounding area gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is providing to our beneficiaries. The advancement of amateur sport The management of St Oliver Plunkett Youth Club believe that our purpose satisfies both elements of the public benefit requirement for the advancement of amateur sport. The aim is to advance amateur sport for the public benefit in particular but not exclusively by providing facilities for Gymnastics, football and Karate for young people in Crossmaglen and the surrounding area. These beneficiaries are those who participate and experience physical exertion. These benefits can be demonstrated by documenting the level of skill in which the beneficiaries advance during their time at St Oliver Plunkett Youth Club. A private benefit may arise from staff members who are paid a wage but these benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. There is no harm.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
It is widely recognised throughout the youth service that the participation of young people at all levels is a priority in order to achieve a service that is meeting young peoples expressed needs. We have already embarked on a process of staff training in order to facilitate full participation of young people at all levels within our centre. We
hope to continue with this process over the coming years in order that young people feel that they are valued members, whose opinions are heard, respected and acted upon. We have a number of young people currently attending the centre with various disabilities and we feel that their attendance here is great for their development. We are also aware that we have to constantly assess the needs of young people from ethnic minorities within the community and we do this through many programmes and trips. Young people throughout the South Armagh area have stated that they need information and services particularly in relation to sexual health, drugs and alcohol and mental health, therefore we see this as a priority so we carry out many workshops and programmes highlighting this. Many of our programmes have been in conjunction with the local police officers and this has been a great benefit to the local young people. We encourage young people from the area to volunteer with local groups and involve them in local activities. As a way of reducing and anti-social behaviour which young people can become involved in during the Halloween period in the Crossmaglen and wider South Armagh area many of the young people will volunteer during the festival. St Oliver Plunkett Youth Club provides a friendly environment for young people where they can socialise in a safe atmosphere and learn life skills through informal methods.
