Public benefits

The benefits which come from NI Opera’s first purpose are a commitment to the promotion of opera throughout Northern Ireland, an art form which is often seen as elitist and not for everyone. The promotion of NI Opera as Northern Ireland’s national opera company further afield is another key benefit for the cultural reputation of the province. The

company’s commitment to making opera more accessible and encouraging audiences to attend productions and events is demonstrated by offering affordable ticket prices, performing operas with English translations, touring productions to venues and areas where opera has not visited before, and engaging with local communities through outreach activities. The benefits of NI Opera’s second purpose reflect a commitment to ensuring audiences enjoy the productions and events that they attend, whether they are attending a large scale production in the Grand Opera House or an evening of Mozart music in their local arts centre performed by members of NI Opera’s Young Artists’ Programme. To ensure that this happens, the company are committed to staging operas of the highest standard which are dramatic, engaging and feature a top roster of performers and creative artists with high production values. The use of singers and musicians from Ireland also appeals to audiences especially young local singers who perform in productions as chorus members and in a variety of events through the Young Artists' Programme. NI Opera's two purposes provide numerous benefits and these are demonstrated through the positive audience and participant feedback, critical reviews, and a loyal and growing audience throughout Northern Ireland. The profile of NI Opera, and the cultural offering of Northern Ireland, has also been raised through the involvement in partnerships with other arts organisations and opera companies in Europe, Russia and China. NI Opera’s main beneficiaries are singers, musicians and creative artists from the island of Ireland, traditional opera audiences and new audiences taking a chance on the art form, and the schools and community centres that the company work with.

prices affordable and through the regular use of English, NI Opera aims to broaden the audience for the total art form that famously combines exciting stories, big spectacle, and great music. It aims to be a company that genuinely belongs to its community by engaging in a wide range of education and outreach activities, and will continue to collaborate with other opera companies and organisations and develop new partnerships further afield.
