Public benefits

The purpose of Mourne Stimulus Limited is to relieve those affected by mental illness and promote and protect the mental and physical health of adults with learning disabilities and associated problems and their families and carers through the provision of Day care services, respite and/or supported accommodation, respite opportunities and

activities, short breaks, counselling, training and support ancillary to those provided by the statutory authorities. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include the promotion of social inclusion and integration by raising awareness of the issues affecting those with learning disabilities, their families and carers, without distinction of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnic identity, political or religious opinion. These benefits are demonstrated through our centre open days, volunteers involvement in community social events, cross community support, holidays, visiting local community facilities and local businesses, and the provision of local employment. The purposes of our charity will not lead to any harm. The charity’s beneficiaries are the thirty seven attendees, their families and carers. There are no private benefits flowing from the purpose.

What your organisation does

Our Services Daycare Service Since the mid 1980s Mourne Stimulus has been providing a person centred daycare service to around 40 adults with varying degrees of learning disability. Based in Kilkeel, our Daycare Centre aims to develop independent life skills in a stimulating environment. We offer a wide range of activities, educational, vocational

and essential skills training where we concentrate on abilities, not disabilities. Our Garden Project offers a therapeutic environment where attenders are given responsibility for maintaining the garden and grounds. Our Picture Framing Studio promotes a work ethos and provides an opportunity for attenders to be creative and interact with the public. We offer facilities for sensory stimulation and, as communication is essential for self expression, we encourage the use of Makaton signs and symbols. Our attenders play an important role in our local community through integration in events around the town. The Mourne Stimulus Choir is well known and performs regularly in public, demonstrating their passion for music, drama and communication. Plans for Short Break / Respite Accommodation There is no Short Break accommodation appropriate for adults with learning disabilities in the local area. This means that most adults with learning disabilities rarely get a holiday and most ageing parents never get respite from care giving confident that their family member is being cared for appropriately. Having identified this growing need and discussed it with parents, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, the Health Minister and others Mourne Stimulus set about planning the development of state of the art Short Break accommodation that will be in the heart of the community offering a home from home to adults with varying degrees of learning and physical disabilities. Throughout the pandemic Mourne Stimulus has provided remote support for those who have been shielding and isolated due to lockdowns.
