Public benefits

Purpose : Advance and promote for the public benefit environmental conservation, protection, improvement and sustainability in Northern Ireland. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include a valued, healthy and resilient natural environment for current and future generations. These benefits are demonstrated by a) the development and

delivery of policy which seeks to conserve, protect and improve the natural and built heritage of Northern Ireland b) development and delivery of practical projects and programmes which encourage partnership and collaboration between government, the community and voluntary sector to raise awareness of environmental issues and engage local communities and schools to deliver environmental projects on the ground which also positively contributing to the beneficiaries collective health and wellbeing. There is no harm associated with this purpose. The beneficiaries include NIEL members, organisations/groups with an interest in the protection and conservation of the environment and the population of Northern Ireland and beyond. A private benefit to trustees may arise from training provided. Through this training, trustees have the opportunity to develop their knowledge/skills relating to financial management, project management, HR and good governance practices, skills which are transferrable to another setting. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to the charity beneficiaries. Purpose: Raise awareness of environmental issues by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and promoting a collective voice on environmental matters. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include an informed, well-functioning and efficient environmental NGO sector which shares information, advice and best practice and works in partnership through task forces, working groups and other forums to inform government policy for a healthy environment. These benefits are demonstrated by the development and implementation of environmentally relevant government policy and feedback from member and non-member surveys commissioned by the organisation. There is no harm associated with this purpose. The beneficiaries include NIEL members, organisations/groups with an interest in the protection and conservation of the environment and the population of Northern Ireland and beyond. Purpose: Advance the education of all sections of the public in environmental and ecological sciences. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include increased awareness and understanding among the public of the importance of environmental protection and conservation. This benefit is demonstrated through feedback from NIEL members, community groups, schools and other interest groups that have participated in an environmental project or programme delivered by the organisation. There is no harm associated with this purpose. The beneficiaries include NIEL members, participating schools, organisations/groups with an interest in the protection and conservation of the environment and interested members of the public of Northern Ireland. There are no private benefits identified for this purpose.

What your organisation does

Northern Ireland Environment Link is the umbrella and networking body for environmental NGO's in Northern Ireland. Our aim is to be a collective voice promoting the importance of environmental issues through influencing policy and developing partnerships for a healthy environment. NIEL has 65 full members and 50 associate members and delivers a

range of policies and projects related to the environment of Northern Ireland.

Charitable purposes

Original purposes: To advance the education of all sections of the public in environmental and ecological sciences by the provision of facilities and information and by the establishment and promotion of links and initiatives designed to advance such education and to increase public awareness of environmental matters (including conservation of the environment). Updated purposes as approved by the NI Charity Commission and at the Northern Ireland Environment Link AGM on 17 September 2014: (1) Advance and promote for the public benefit environmental conservation, protection, improvement and sustainability in Northern Ireland (2) Raise awareness of the importance of environmental issues by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and promoting a collective voice on environmental matters (3) Advance the education of all sections of the public in environmental and ecological sciences.
