Public benefits
The Public Benefit from our first purpose is that our members in their Third Age will lead better educated, trained, informed, fulfilled, and longer healthier lives of higher quality. The Public Benefit from our second purpose is improved general health and hence reduction in demand on public health services. Other beneficial aspects include team
building, the stimulation of competition and social interaction These benefits are evidenced from participant feedback and surveys which have shown that engagement in U3A activities have been a lifeline, especially to those who live alone or have suffered a close bereavement. Feedback indicates improvements in brain function, cognitive ability, communication skills and a deeper understanding of environmental and technological developments. Evidence to demonstrate this Benefit is that there are now over 320,000+ members of 915 similarly constituted U3As across the United Kingdom. Most of these are or will soon become separately registered charities. The beneficiaries are the public who live in Holywood County Down and surrounding districts, and have ceased full-time employment. Some individuals and organisations may gain a private benefit from our activities, as fees and expenses incurred to educate our members and to rent accommodation for our meetings. We will ensure this is minimised and is entirely incidental in achieving the purposes of our U3A.
