Public benefits

Purposes: a) To relieve the suffering and distress of persons injured or in danger of being injured through accident or natural hazard particularly in the area of the Mourne Mountains but elsewhere if necessary. b) To educate and inform the public concerning safety and rescue in mountainous and other outdoor environments. Public Benefit

Statement: Purpose (a) The direct benefits which flow from purpose (a) include the potential for lives to be saved and serious injuries to be minimised following incidents in the Mourne Mountains and beyond AND improved safety provision in general for everyone enjoying the Mourne Mountains. These benefits are demonstrated through the careful recording of all call-outs and rescues by the MMRT many of which are reported in the media. The purposes of our charity may lead to the following harm. There may be occasions when the option of rescue is too late and the person/s may already be deceased or there may be injury caused to the rescuers, however, we can show that this harm is outweighed by the benefits of making a rescue attempt. MMRT records over 40 years in existence demonstrate a huge success rate and a very high safety record for team members and members of the public. The charity’s beneficiaries are everyone who enjoys the great outdoors and especially the environs of the Mourne Mountains and who require our help. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is the potential for Directors to tender for the supply of specialist equipment or services on occasions, however any such conflict of interests will always be declared in advance and alternative quotations from similar suppliers sought on every occasion. Purpose (b) The direct benefits which flow from purpose (b) include increased awareness among the general public of the dangers of using the Mountains and what actions to take in the event of an incident occurring. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from schools, community and other groups during talks given on a regular basis by MMRT team members and in the level of donations received by grateful members of the public. There is no harm arising from this purpose. The charity’s beneficiaries are members of the general public and in particular people in groups who request talks by the MMRT. There is no private benefit arising from this purpose.

What your organisation does

MMRT is an entirely voluntary group of skilled personnel who constantly train to improve our ability to respond on a 24/7/365 basis to the general public who may be lost, injured or in danger of injury in the mountains (mainly in The Mourne Mountains). We maintain a fleet of all terrain vehicles and equipment to enable us to save lives and relieve

distress. We work with a wide range of partners including the PSNI, Coastguard, NIAS, NIF&RS and others to provide a professional service to people who enjoy the outdoors. On average we respond to 40 emergency calls per year in all weather conditions and detailed statistics are maintained of all our operations.
