Public benefits

The Association is established to promote the benefit of the inhabitants of the Brownstown area and its environs of Portadown by associating the statutory authorities, community and voluntary organisations and the inhabitants in a common effort to advance education, and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or

other leisure-time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants and in particular: Purpose One -to maintain and manage a community centre in the area of benefit for activities promoted by the Association (hereinafter called "the Centre"); The direct benefit flowing from this, is a safe and neutral facility for residents of the said area of benefit to use for meetings or training courses with various educational or government bodies. The benefit is evidenced by word of mouth from the attendees and feedback after using the Centre from the organisational bodies. This purpose does not lead to any harm. The benefit is for all inhabitants within the environs of Brownstown in Portadown .A private benefit flowing from this is that a trustee or family member may use the Centre in same manner as all other residents, this is purely incidental and necessary, so that the benefit is available to all. Purpose Two - to support the development of a cohesive, shared and integrated community and promote the wellbeing of those living in the area of benefit through the provision of educational, social and recreational activities; The direct benefit is a united community which has come together as one to achieve its targets. Further benefits is a more vibrant and inclusive society via the educational programmes and recreational activities. These benefits are evidenced through the diverse set up within the organisation, also through feedback generated from the activities laid on by the organisation. The purpose does not lead to any harm. These benefits are for all residents within the Brownstown area. Private benefits from these are purely incidental and necessary to any group member, as family members of all can avail of any opportunities arising. Purpose Three - to relieve those in need by reason of youth, age, ill health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage by providing them with information, representation, and advocacy with issues such as housing, community safety, the environment and community relations; The direct benefit flowing from this a more informed society and healthier community lifestyle, giving them a better standard of living conditions and environment. This is evidenced by the group’s representation on the various Committees, and via the community newsletter outlining the successes carried out for the community. The purpose does not lead to any harm. This benefit is for all within the Brownstown community. The private benefit for Group members is in line with the rest of the community, which is gaining a healthier lifestyle, and being better informed, this is purely incidental and necessary so that the benefit is available to all.

What your organisation does

BOATA activities include running a series of classes i.e. computer classes, first aid, health and safety, youth forum, and over fifties club, Women’s Group and The Portadown Somme Fellowship. Residents from Brownstown have taken part in different courses over the year, courses like. These are a few of the courses that are available to all

residents in the area. Training for: Drug awareness training. IT training Women’s group good practice visit, craft, healthy eating, cook it Environmental Improvements, Intergenerational Project Brownstown Women’s Group Cultural Understanding Child protection training. Over the past year Boata members have continued to represent Brownstown residents at meetings with all the local statuary bodies, Craigavon Borough Council, Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s, Housing Community Network, Area Housing Community Network, and Central Housing Community Network. We hold interagency meetings each month, making sure our views are heard in the right places and by the right people. BOATA continue to represent our residents at meetings with the Housing Executive on housing matters that affect the Brownstown area. Group members maintain the flower beds at the entrance to the estate and entrance features to the BEST Centre. The committee held a fun day in Brownstown Park in July. Everyone who attended enjoyed them self’s. Brownstown women’s group hold a coffee morning each Friday morning. The committee continue to work with the Social Investment Fund and are looking forward to getting the extension to the BEST Centre started. Following requests from local residents the BOATA committee have agreed to explore setting up a Men’s Shed and Hen’s Shed at the BEST Centre. Funding permitting we plan the development of a community garden at the Centre for residents to use and enjoy.

The purposes are stated at clause 3 of the Constitution of Brownstown Owners and Tenants Association.
