Public benefits

Purpose 1 – the advancement of health or the saving of lives by advancing the education of veterans and serving members of the armed forces, their families and the general public as to the symptoms and indicators of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated problems. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include increased

awareness among veterans and their families of the symptoms of PTSD, enabling them to better identify the issues they are facing without needing to self medicate through the use of alcohol or drugs. This will also result in benefit to the veteran and their extended family to enable them to work and face the problem together, which in itself can contribute to a successful outcome. Benefit also includes the pressure taken off the medical services as a result of the services we provide. These benefits can be evidenced through the improvement in the mental and physical health of our clients and through the increasing numbers of veterans who avail of our services and who have been made aware of the symptoms and causes of PTSD. Purpose 2 – reliving need, hardship and distress among veterans and serving members of the armed forces through the provision of advice and social activities. Each individual’s priorities and needs are established before they are given a course of counselling by a counsellor specialised in the related area. An evaluation is carried out in order to establish the hardship and distress they are suffering. The benefits of such counselling and assessments are the establishment of the needs of each veteran as an important first step. Further benefits are the integration of these individuals back into society and the increased socialising element of life for such veterans by establishing group participation activities to increase confidence and social skills. These benefits are evidenced through each client’s improvement as a result of the counselling they receive and the feeling of self worth through integration with others that they get back. Purpose 3 – the prevention or relief of poverty by acting as an advocate and intermediary between service personnel and local support providers who can provide them with additional assistance. Veterans can become institutionalised and have no knowledge of the outside world or how to integrate into society. They are not equipped to meet their needs to ensure that they do not fall into poverty. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the provision of advice on housing, benefits, schools, employment and counselling to better equip veterans to meet their needs and know how and where to seek assistance. Furthermore, veterans are able to settle into civilian life and are less likely to suffer from poverty if they avail of the assistance available, both financial and non-financial. These benefits are evidenced through each client’s individual improvement as a result of the support they receive from Beyond the Battlefield and other support groups. The trustees are satisfied that the purposes of our charity do not lead to any harm. Although some of our clients are of poor mental and physical health, we have the appropriate mechanisms and professionals in place to deal with such issues and this is fundamental to our work. The charity’s beneficiaries include anyone who has engaged in service to their country including the police, emergency services or volunteers, and who is in need as a result of serving their country. This may include those suffering from flash backs, stress, worry, breakdown or PTS or those in poverty or ill-health. We deal also with the families of sufferers and working many different fields to give them the benefit of knowing they are not alone. There is private benefit arising from the purposes in that there will be benefits to the employees and the staff who work for Beyond the Battlefield. However, these benefits are necessary and incidental to ensure that we achieve our purposes.

What your organisation does

Beyond the Battlefield work daily and tirelessly with Veterans who are all counselled and assessed free of charge. We listen to veterans needs Everyone is in agreement that Northern Ireland veterans require a centre where they can go in confidence to feel safe in the knowledge that who they are speaking to can be trusted. This will be a centre

where all their issues are dealt with. It will be used for counselling ‘dealing with benefits’ housing’ pensions’ compensation as well as conferences Beyond the Battlefield believe that a Veterans centre will be to the benefit of everyone and will also bring massive benefits to the town of Newtownards. The veterans centre will create employment and tourism. There will be an increase in trade to the town and to our traders who have suffered badly due to the high unemployment over the last few years. There will be massive benefits to our Veterans and to all the services such as the Health service’ the Police’ The mental health services’ and to family doctors who will for the first time be able to get Veterans the proper treatment they need in order to move on with their lives. The benefit to the families and to communities will also be immense as Wives get husbands back ‘Children get their fathers back and our Veterans getting the pride back they had whilst serving our country. Beyond the battlefield aims to become Northern Ireland own service charity with our own Veterans centre. Northern Ireland Veterans presenting with PTSD region by region are the highest in the UK which is not surprising given the fact that our Veterans were on constant active service for almost 35 years. To many Veterans and their families are suffering its up to us as a society to make sure they get a fair deal and receive the thanks they deserve for keeping us safe.
