Public benefits
The objects for which the Charity is established are to promote, maintain, improve and advance the education of the general public in the arts generally, and more particularly (but not limited to) drama, dance and other performing arts. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include:- • The public performance of theatre and the
associated education of audiences through theatrical performances. • The provision of a public space in which participants can experience live theatre. • The provision of workshops, classes, talks and seminars to the public and the associated education of those attending. • The provision of classes for young people. • The funding of opportunities for people to attend live theatre and to participate in workshops operated by the Lyric. • The provision of apprenticeships and internships for people beginning in a career in theatre. • Supporting emerging writers and theatre practitioners. • Supporting the education, social welfare and health sectors in the provision of their services. Can you demonstrate this? • Over 98,000 people attended performances at the Lyric Theatre in 2013/14. • A further 40,000 people visited the theatre in 2014/15 to participate in learning programme, take a tour or enjoy the public spaces. • Almost 20,000 people participated in the theatre’s learning programme. • In 2013/14 the theatre funded tickets to the value of £65,000 to allow people to attend a theatrical production • The theatre provides 100% funded bursary places in its theatre school and summer schools for children from low income families. • The theatre supported three internships in 2013/14 • The theatre supported an emerging writer through its Playwright in Residence programme in 2013/13 including the commissioning of a new play • The theatre provided 15 fully-funded places on its Drama Studio programme from which some participants have secured professional employment or places in Drama Schools in the UK and Ireland • The theatre has operated learning programmes that have supported people affected by disability, mental health and homelessness. There is no harm arising out of our purposes. The benefit is for the general public in Northern Ireland. The only other private benefit is the provision of tickets and hospitality to Trustees of the charity. These benefits are incidental and necessary to the proper governance and operation of the charity e.g. attendance at opening nights of productions, hosting key funders and sponsors, etc.
