Public benefits

Objective 1 This charitable object involves the advancement of citizenship and community development through its object of enhancing the environment of the Portaferry and Strangford community. The local community will be involved in enhancing their own area. The object also advances the Arts, culture and heritage through the objective to

preserve the built heritage of the area (both Portaferry and Strangford are conservation areas). The intent is to refurbish local heritage buildings and thereby improve the local environment and encourage tourist visitors to these historic villages. The object is also within the charitable object of advancement of education in that it involves stimulating the public interest in the heritage of the area. All of the above is for the benefit of the local community and visitors to the area. Objective 2 This objective is of public benefit in that will enhance the environment of the area to the benefit of residents and visitors alike and will encourage tourism in the area (both Portaferry and Strangford) are Conservation areas). By involving the local community the object will facilitate the advancement of citizenship and community development for example by involving the community in tree planting, horticulture and painting of derelict and other properties. This will foster pride in the area and ownership and care by the local community of their environment. Objective 3 This object will be of public benefit by promoting education of the public (residents and visitors) on the architectural heritage of the area. This will stimulate the local residents or visitors to support the refurbishment of the villages and promote pride in their area so that it is better cared for and will encourage the economic development of the area to the benefit of the community.. Objective 4 This object is within the charitable object of the advancement of environmental protection or improvement and of education as it encourages the concept of education on sustainability by using sustainable methods of conservation and reuse of heritage buildings. The benefit is to the local community and the public generally. By educating people in sustainability this will have economic benefits to the community in reducing long term energy and refurbishment costs. Objective 5 This objective is within the charitable object of the advancement of education and community development by encouraging the fostering of research by the local community for the benefit of the public. This will encourage the development of literature on the area and retention of important artefacts of historical importance for the benefit of the Community which increases knowledge by the local community and visitors of the area. NB: The Directors confirm that there is no private benefit to any Directors or members of Portaferry & Strangford Trust Ltd from the above objectives. The Directors also confirm that the above objectives will not in their opinion cause harm to the area or community and will be for the benefit of the area and local community.

Charitable purposes

(i) To secure by such means as are available for the public benefit the preservation, protection and improvement of buildings or land or structures or maritime vessels of particular beauty, or of historic, environmental, architectural constructional merit or of maritime interest in the Portaferry and Strangford area, and to stimulate and educate public interest therein; (ii) make environmental improvements to properties, streets, streetscape and land (including Parkland) seashore and piers generally in the areas of Portaferry and Strangford including where appropriate planting and horticultural improvements; (iii) generally promote and encourage the education of the public in historic architecture or maritime vessels, understanding of planning, and appreciation of the built or maritime environment, landscape and townscape environment whether through exhibitions lectures seminars or otherwise or by commenting on planning applications; (iv) to heighten awareness of the importance of the concept of sustainability and promote sustainable development; (v) to carry out, encourage and foster research of the heritage of the Portaferry and Strangfrod area, including maritime heritage and so far as may be practicable to disseminate the results of same, to cause to be written and printed or otherwise reproduced and circulated, gratuitously or otherwise, literature, reports and other documents including maritime information generally.
