Public benefits

2.(i) bringing together in a fellowship of loyalty and devotion all who care for the ancient foundation of the Cathedral Church of St Patrick Armagh and its continuing witness to the glory of God. The direct benefit which flows from purpose 2.(i) is the gathering around the Cathedral of a body of supporters (the ‘Friends) extending beyond its

congregation and across denominational boundaries. This benefit is evidenced through ? the list of members; ? the holding of an annual festival service to which members are invited; ? the circulation of a Friends’ prayer card; ? the holding of events which are both social and fund-raising. No harm flows from the purposes of the Friends. The charity’s principal beneficiary is the general public, more specifically the public of Northern Ireland and the people of the City of Armagh, tourists and visitors, including future generations, through the support afforded to the Cathedral (for which see under purpose 2.(ii) below). There is no private benefit from this purpose. PURPOSE 2(ii) assisting in the maintenance and preservation of the Cathedral for posterity. The direct benefits which flow from purpose 2.(ii) include the provision of financial support for the maintenance and enhancement of the fabric of the Cathedral; the provision of financial support for aspects of the life and worship of the Cathedral not provided for from other resources of the Cathedral Chapter, Board or Choir; the provision of facilities for visitors to the Cathedral. These benefits are evidenced by ? the giving of Friends to the Cathedral Development Appeal 2010 – 2103; ? the gift of a stained-glass window to commemorate the millennium in the year 2000; ? the provision of handrails for health and safety in the Cathedral in 2014; ? Financial assistance with the production of a souvenir guidebook for the Cathedral in 2012; ? the provision of visitors’ leaflets for the Cathedral; ? the provision (and re-printing in 2013) of a children’s guide to the Cathedral; ? the support of Cathedral choristers attending the annual Charles Wood Summer School and Festival of Music; ? assistance to the choir with the cost of transport for outings; ? the provision of candles; ? the running of a shop for visitors to the Cathedral. No harm flows from the purposes of the Friends. The charity’s principal beneficiary is the general public, more specifically the public of Northern Ireland, the people of Armagh, tourists and visitors, including future generations. St Patrick’s Cathedral is of great historic and architectural significance, a Grade A Listed Building, and is rated as a 4-star visitor attraction by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. The charity’s second beneficiary is the Anglican Communion of Churches, as represented by the Church of Ireland, the Diocese of Armagh, the Cathedral Chapter, Board and congregation. The Cathedral is the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Church of Ireland, the seat of the Archbishop of Armagh. The charity’s third beneficiary is those who value the traditions of Church Music, specifically that of the Anglican tradition maintained in the Cathedral. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is to the Dean in his position as Dean and as Chair of the Management Committee. This is necessary because of his responsibility as Dean for the life and worship of the Cathedral exercised with the Chapter and as Chair of the Cathedral Board. There is no personal or financial benefit to the Dean.
