Public benefits

A. To advance the Christian faith Direct benefits that flow from this purpose include many spiritual benefits that derive from Christian practices and disciplines and a range of temporal benefits that accrue to church participants. Recent research by T. M. Luhrmann identifies a range of physical and mental health benefits from church attendance

such as lowered prevalence of depression, stress and blood pressure and bonding and bridging social capital. New York Times, April 20, 2013. Bacon, (Splendid & Disappointing, University of Ulster, 2004) provides local research evidence of these and other benefits. These benefits are evidenced by improved levels of spiritual and mental health and by positive attitudes to work, citizenship and behaviour and would be reflected in statistics such as those collected by NISRA & PSNI. The beneficiaries of this purpose are men and women and young people from Coleraine, Portrush, Portstewart and Ballymoney and from further afield who avail of the services and facilities of the Trust. They include both persons of Northern Ireland origin and ethnic minorities. Harm and/or private benefit. No potential causes of harm have been identified. Private benefit is purely incidental and occurs when trustees participate in events held in the trust’s building on the same basis as members of the public. B. To relieve persons who are in conditions of need or hardship Direct benefits that flow from this purpose include reducing social exclusion on account of poverty. Benefit flows to the needy persons who are being relieved so that they become functioning and productive members of society and cease being a burden to others. Benefit also accrues to members of the public by reason of the increased capacity of the erstwhile needy person. These benefits are evidenced in the feedback from the erstwhile person and with reference to public perceptions of improved civic amenity and community safety. The beneficiaries of this purpose are persons who previously were needy but who have been helped to become functioning and productive members of society. C. To advance education Direct benefits that flow from this purpose include spiritual and social benefits both now and in the hereafter. Benefit flows to the members of the public of all ages from Biblical teaching and its application to daily life. This promotes respect for other persons and for law. It strengthens families, promotes citizenship and fosters democracy. These benefits are evidenced by increased knowledge of the teachings of the Christian faith among members of the public and by strengthened patterns of citizenship and increased prevalence of positive social behaviour. Further evidence of benefit would include progress by some members into formal Biblical and theological training and education. The beneficiaries of this purpose are members of the public and their families and friends. They include men and women and young people from Coleraine, Portrush, Portstewart and Ballymoney and from further afield who avail of the services and facilities of the Trust. They include both persons of Northern Ireland origin and ethnic minorities. Harm and/or private benefit. No potential causes of harm have been identified. Private benefit is purely incidental and occurs when trustees participate in events held in the trusts building on the same basis as members of the public.
