Public benefits

The direct benefits that flow from this purpose is the education of the public in science through informal (e.g. interactive exhibits) and formal ( e.g. programmes to support science national curriculum) learning methods at the science centre based in Belfast and outreach programmes throughout Northern Ireland. The benefits are evidenced by

feedback from and numbers of visitors. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. The charity’s beneficiaries are the public at large, either resident in or visiting Northern Ireland. A private benefit to trustees may arise from their association with the charity and from training in good governance which may deliver skills that are transferable to other settings or which may assist towards obtaining other appointments. A private benefit to trustees may also arise in that they may, in their role as trustees, from time to time attend events held at the science centre These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure delivery of the benefits provided to the charity’s beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

Whowhatwherewhenwhy (W5) lease a Science Centre at Queens Quay, Belfast from the the Odyssey Trust Company Limited (OTC). W5 is a wholly owned subsidiary of OTC which is also a charity with related charitable objects. The facility includes 3 floors of permanent exhibits, space for temporary exhibitions, laboratories for use by schools/groups, state

of the art lecture theatre and meeting rooms. W5 provides education in science both formally and informally. There are over 200 permanent exhibits and daily science related demonstrations open to the general public 362 days of the year. This is supported by regular events. W5 has a dedicated team of science education specialists who provide education programmes supporting the Northern Ireland Curriculum from preschool to A level. W5 currently holds the STEMNET contract for Northern Ireland the aim being to link schools to business in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects. In 2012/13 w5 catered for 302,452 visitors (including outreach) including 48,958 in formal education groups.
