Public benefits
Purpose 1: The direct benefits which flow from this object include the i. promotion of performance excellence in Classical Music; ii. provision of performance for those members of the public specifically interested in classical music; iii. promotion of our cultural heritage; iv. development of the artists of the future thereby advancing the arts
and securing the future of culture for the public in general. These benefits are evidenced through attendance at Sestina’s activities (e.g. the full house at Ulster Museum Belfast for the performance of Purcell’s King Arthur in April 2014), and the support received from public and private bodies (e.g. Arts Council NI, Arts & Business NI and Exitex Ltd of Dundalk). No harm derives from this purpose. No private benefit will ensue from it except the payment of world-class musicans used in the mentoring of young performers (though this will be a benefit in that the livelihoods of such mentors will be sustained and a circle of benefit created). The charity’s beneficiaries are the general public interested in Classical Music. Purpose 2: The direct benefits to young artists which flow from this object include i. the encouragement and growth of their talents; ii. their learning of repertoire and performance skills; iii. the contacts, confidence and performance experience they gain; iv. funding young artists in their necessary purchase of equipment and classes’ This will be demonstrated by the careers of senior and former Sestinas ( who now include an Opera North junior, an Oxford College Lay Clark and several post-graduates in training at esteemed institutions); the growth in numbers of Sestinas (from 6 in 2011 to 25 in 2014 ); the mentoring of newcomers and the recruitment of those newcomers itself. No harm derives from this purpose. No private benefit derives from this objective except for mentors as outlined above. The charity’s beneficiaries are young musicians in the group 14 to 30 years of age. Purpose 3: The direct benefits which flow from this object include the i. enrichment of cultural life in Ireland and elsewhere; ii. promotion and awareness of an enormous body of music once commonplace in public perception but now often seen as ‘niche’; iii. provision of artistic education, mentoring and opportunity for young artists and the public in general. This will be demonstrated by attendance at master-classes and production-related courses (e.g. War Years Remembered in Ulster Museum during the performance week of King Arthur attended by over 1,000 people), and support from public and private bodies (e.g. Arts Council NI, Arts & Business NI and Exitex Ltd of Dundalk). No harm derives from this purpose. No private benefit derives from this objective apart necessary payment to the supporting mentors as above. The charity’s beneficiaries are the general public.
