Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are First Responders will use a defibrillator and provide First Aid in the case of a medical emergency until medical help arrives. A second benefit is to coordinate the use of existing defibrillators in the parish. A third benefit is the provision of training in basic life support skills to any

member of our community via five of our members who are trained by the British Heart Foundation to deliver the Heartstart Programme. These benefits will be evidenced through feedback from members of the community who have benefited from our call out; accurate records are kept on an event form; Western Urgent Care and the N I Ambulance Service will be overseeing the organisation; written evaluation by participants in the Heartstart training. In providing defibrillation the First Responder could risk the lives of bystanders or themselves if they touch the patient while shock is being administered however the training provided is clear that everyone stands back. Risk assessment is an important element of the training to ensure that a First Responder does not put themselves in a dangerous situation, thus the benefits outweigh the harm. The benefit is for the inhabitants of the Parish of Termonmaguirc or someone visiting the area who becomes unwell. A private benefit to trustees may arise from our ongoing training where skills are learned which are transferable to other settings. A trustee might also benefit from the defibrillator being used on them or a family member but because of the life threatening nature of the service this is not something the trustee would seek unless a medical emergency and in this case the service is accessed as any other member of the community would access it. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

We are training as many members of our community as possible in basic life support skills in the event of someone collapsing there would be someone there to dial 999 and initiate basic life support. The 999 call will alert the first responders on call or any responder available who will then make their way to the scene and assist until the

ambulance arrives, early intervention helps to improve the outcome. We are working alongside NI Ambulance Service to help improve outcome .
