Public benefits

1. To promote the playing, understanding and appreciation of brass band music in its various forms. The direct benefit which flows from purpose one is that the cultural lives of the general public of Northern Ireland will be enriched with high quality musical performances. This benefit can be evidenced through the feedback from the general

public and audience members who have listened to our performances. This purpose will not lead to any harm and results in no private benefit. 2. The provision of training for band members by way of regular practices, private and public musical engagements and taking part in contests. The direct benefit which flows from purpose two is the high standard of musicianship attained by our members, and in particular the accelerated development of novice players. This high standard is evidenced through success in contests in Northern Ireland, Great Britain and abroad. Development of novice players is evidenced in earlier attainment of musical grade examinations when compared to schoolmates that are not members of the band. This purpose will not lead to any harm. A private benefit flows from these activities in the form of paying minimal expenses to a musical director and on occasions a fee for the services of a professional band trainer. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. 3. To enhance the musical interests of the public, thereby publicising the name and accomplishments of the city of Belfast. The direct benefit which flows from purpose three is the increased reputation of Belfast as a city that produces world class musicians and musical performances of artistic merit. These benefits can be demonstrated by the band regularly representing Northern Ireland in contests in other parts of the United Kingdom and Europe. Regular broadcasts of our recordings on BBC Radio Ulster with the occasional TV appearance and regular uploads of our live performances on YouTube and other social media further enhances our exposure to the public and the links to Belfast and Northern Ireland. This purpose will not lead to any harm and results in no private benefit. 4. To foster good relationships and participation with other musical organisations within the Belfast area. The direct benefit which flows from purpose four is that good relationships are fostered with other musical organisations. This benefit is evidenced through our inclusion of all elements of the community and our policy not to discriminate against gender, age, ethnicity, religion or sexuality. Cooperation with other musical groups can be evidenced through the use of guest players from many local bands and many of our concerts are joint ventures with other organisations. This purpose will not lead to any harm and results in no private benefit. 5. To increase facilities for the musical advancement of the members and to stimulate local interest in the musical and cultural development of the band. The direct benefit which flows from purpose five is the enrichment of the cultural lives of communities in which our members reside and of our audience. This benefit can be demonstrated by our continual updating of repertoire and the support we get from the public during and after performances. We have particularly targeted youth development and formed a Youth Band a number of years ago. Many of these children come from the surrounding area, some of which experiences social deprivation and the band enables these children to participate in a constructive activity, namely a collective musical experience with the aim of building teamwork and co-operation. The Youth Band meets weekly and members of the Senior Band give their time voluntarily to tutor and mentor their development. This purpose will not lead to any harm and results in no private benefit.

What your organisation does

We bring together members of the community from all walks in life for a collective musical experience. Our purpose is to provide a facility for any person to play, or learn to play a brass or percussion instrument to the best of their abilities and to pass on our knowledge and experience to the next generations of musicians to keep the tradition

of brass bands alive in our community. We offer support from a group of volunteers who give their time freely on either a one-to-one basis or as part of a group.
