Public benefits

The purpose of the charity is to promote social inclusion for older people aged 60 years and over resident in the Creggan and surrounding areas of Derry through various recreational activities. The direct benefits that flow from this project include the relief and integration into society of older people. The charity provides much needed

recreational activities for older people to interact and socialise and feel part of the community. It also has economic benefits in that it provides recreational activities for older people who do not have the money to join other clubs or programmes. It educates them in the importance of such activities to their health and wellbeing. The charity provides suitable environmentally friendly premises/facilities/equipment and a point of social contact to stimulate and sustain their interest in popular recreational pastimes/activities suitable to their age, state of health and ability. These benefits are evidenced through a 6 monthly survey of members, family and friends. The feedback is co-ordinated by the trustees and committee and subsequently discussed at a general meeting. The purpose of the charity has been assessed by the trustees and committee and no harm has been envisaged. The charities beneficiaries are older people aged 60 years and over resident in the Creggan and surrounding areas of Derry. The charity recognises no private benefit arising from its purpose.

What your organisation does

The charity is committed to enabling as many as possible through club membership to participate in the following recreational activities organised by the club committee. Club members have access to Allotment plots, Greenhouse, two (2 ) full sized fully equipped snooker tables, with a separate tea /television room, dart room, meeting room etc 10

hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks of the year. Club members, family and friends have the opportunity to take part, either locally and throughout the city, in various talks, programmes, competitions etc organised or facilitated by the committee on a regular basis.

Charitable purposes

3.1 The Club is established to relieve the elderly and aged, promote social inclusion and promote the benefit of men aged 60 years and over (hereinafter called “the beneficiaries”) resident in the Creggan and surrounding areas of Derry (hereinafter called “the area of benefit”) without distinction of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability/ability, race, ethnic origin, political, religious or other opinion by associating the statutory and local authorities, voluntary organisations and the inhabitants in a common effort to relieve the aged and promote social inclusion through various activities such as horticulture, darts, snooker, quiz nights, social evenings, day trips etc and in particular: (a) to provide or assist in the provision of facilities for educational and mental recreation in the interests of social welfare with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the said beneficiaries; (b) to relieve the aged and promote social inclusion for the public benefit among the beneficiaries through the provision or assistance in the provision of facilities and equipment for the coaching, playing and competition of snooker to relieve their needs and assist them to integrate into society; (c) to advance any other exclusively charitable purpose as the Committee may from time to time, decide in accordance with the law of charity. For the purposes of this clause ‘socially excluded’ means people who are excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of one or more of the following factors: age or disability, unemployment; financial hardship or poor educational or skills attainment’.
