1. The relief of people with a learning disability in particular by the provision of help and support for them and for their families, dependants and carers Achieved through campaigning, advocating, information sharing and awareness-raising, the direct benefits flowing from this purpose are that people with a learning disability will have improved
well being and quality of life as will their extended family and caring circles. They will receive better services that fully meet their needs. This will be evidenced through feedback from participants taking part in group events and from group members themselves as the group progresses as well as measuring improvements in service provision. There is no harm or possibility of harm by this benefit. The benefit is for all people with a learning disability in NI, their families and carers as well as group members as they also have a learning disability. 2. To prevent learning disabilities Achieved through education and information sharing, the direct benefits are an increased awareness of how to prevent learning disabilities during pregnancy and child development stages and a public better informed of issues surrounding learning disability. This will be evidenced through feedback from participants taking part in group events and from group members themselves as the group progresses. There is no harm or possibility of harm by this benefit. The benefit is for all people in NI. 3. To provide or assist in the provision of facilities for the recreation or other leisure time occupation for people who have need thereof by reason of learning disability with the object of improving their conditions of life The direct benefit from this purpose is improved health and wellbeing for people with a learning disability by developing opportunities to engage in social activities. This can be demonstrated through the number of events/ activities organised by the Mencap Strule Buzz Group that achieve the same and by the number of participants taking part in these. There is no harm or possibility of harm from this benefit. It is for the benefit of any person with a learning disability in NI, more predominantly in the West of NI, who wishes to take part in the group’s planned activities and/or events. In relation to all of the above; as group members are also people with learning difficulties, any improvements they achieve will create a slight private benefit. This is clearly incidental to the carrying out of the purposes.
