Notifying the Commission of the closure of a registered charity

If your charity is registered in Northern Ireland and it closes down, you must tell the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland. This is a legal requirement under section 17(3) of the Charities Act.

To do this, you need to fill out the form below to:

  • officially notify the Commission that your charity has closed.
  • allow for the public register of charities to be updated so it shows the correct information.

This helps keep the register accurate and ensures the public knows your charity’s current status.

See the Guidance for charities on merging or closing their charity for further information.

Important things to note.

  • If your charity has a permanent endowment (money or property that must be kept forever), you need to be especially careful. The guidance explains what to do.
  • If you need to change your charity’s governing document or get permission to transfer assets before closing, check the Running your charity section on the Commission’s website.
  • If you’re unsure about anything, you can contact the Commission for help.

Warning: It’s a criminal offence to knowingly or carelessly give false information to the Commission. If you’re not sure how to complete the form, it’s best to get professional advice.

Note: This form is only for charities registered in Northern Ireland. If your charity is registered in England and Wales, Scotland, or the Republic of Ireland, you’ll need to contact the relevant regulator.
