Registration threshold leaflet

The Commission has published a new leaflet (available in the sidebar) to help small charities understand upcoming changes to the charity registration rules.

  • Last summer, Communities Minister, Gordon Lyons, agreed to introduce a new registration threshold that will set the financial levels at which a charity must register with the Commission.

Although the threshold is not yet in force - meaning all charities must continue to register as usual - the Commission is providing early guidance to help organisations prepare for the changes ahead.

The new leaflet provides an overview of what the introduction of a threshold means for charities. It is particularly aimed at smaller organisations, whose trustees may wish to begin considering their options in relation to registration.

  • Once the threshold comes into effect, charities with an annual income of £20,000 or less and assets of £100,000 or less will not be required to register with the Commission or submit annual reports and accounts.

However, charities below the threshold may still choose to register voluntarily if they believe doing so would be in the best interest of their charity.

  • The Department for Communities is currently progressing the regulations needed to bring the new threshold into operation. Once confirmed, the Commission will share the implementation timetable and provide guidance and support to help charities navigate the changes.
