Charity and politics

Charities must always be – and be seen to be – independent from party politics. This is a core principle of charity law.

Charities in Northern Ireland often work closely with their communities and can play an important role in informing elected representatives about the issues that affect their beneficiaries.

The Commission’s Charities and politics guidance (available in the sidebar) explains the rules around political purposes, political activity and campaigning. It helps charities stay independent, follow charity law, and use their voice appropriately during election periods.
