Submit a concern about a charity

If you have a concern about a charity, you should raise it with the charity first. If the issue is not resolved, you can report it to the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.

Before submitting a concern, we strongly recommend you read our How to raise a concern about a charity guide. It explains:

  • what types of concerns we can look at.
  • what information we need.
  • what happens after you submit a report.

Submit a concern

All concerns about charities must be submitted in writing using our online concern about a charity form. You can also use the form to send us:

  • a matter of material significance (for independent examiners/auditors).
  • a serious incident report (for charity trustees).

We only accept concerns by phone in special circumstances, such as where someone has an accessibility need.

Note: It is an offence to knowingly or recklessly provide false information to the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland. Please think carefully when completing the form. Make sure the information is accurate to the best of your knowledge, supported by all the evidence you have.

How we handle concerns

When we receive a concern, we assess whether it is something we should deal with and decide what action may be needed.

We only act where there is clear evidence of a problem. We cannot investigate rumours or unsubstantiated claims, as this would misuse public resources and could unfairly disrupt a charity’s work.

Timescales and updates

We are dealing with a high volume of enquiries, so investigations may take time depending on the complexity of the case.

We do not provide regular updates. We will contact you if we need more information. Meetings are by appointment only and arranged by the Commission.

When the investigation is finished, we will let you know the outcome.
