Public benefits

What are the direct benefits flowing from your organisation's purposes? Direct benefits: Educational Advancement – Providing scholarships enables under-resourced South African youth to access quality education in the United Kingdom. Personal and Professional Development – Mentoring equips students with guidance, skills, and support that foster

personal growth and career readiness. Global Exposure and Opportunities – Access to international study experiences broadens students’ perspectives, networks, and future opportunities. Life-Changing Experiences – Overall, the combination of financial support, mentorship, and international exposure transforms the prospects of youth who would otherwise lack these opportunities. For the individual, this means more than just education, it means the chance to grow in confidence, develop valuable skills, broaden their horizons, and become better prepared to build meaningful futures for themselves and their families. Education not only transforms their personal prospects but helps shape them into more responsible, resilient, and community-minded citizens. The benefit also extends beyond the individual. Their communities in South Africa will gain from their knowledge, leadership, and commitment to giving back, helping to reduce cycles of poverty and inequality. At the same time, the United Kingdom – and in particular Northern Ireland – will benefit from the richness of cultural exchange, the strengthening of international relationships, and the contributions these young people will make while studying, volunteering, and engaging locally. This creates opportunities for greater understanding, cooperation, and shared growth between nations. In summary, our charity exists to break down barriers to higher education for disadvantaged youth, not for private gain but for the wider public benefit: uplifting individuals, strengthening communities, and enriching society in both South Africa and the United Kingdom. How can the benefits identified above be demonstrated? The benefits of 1Life Better’s work can be demonstrated through measurable outcomes at both the individual and community levels, as well as through broader societal impact: Educational Outcomes: Tracking scholarship recipients’ academic progress, graduation rates, and achievements in the United Kingdom. Personal Development: Feedback from mentees on improved confidence, skills, and employability. Community Impact: Alumni contributing to their communities in South Africa, such as mentoring others, starting projects, or engaging in social initiatives. Cultural Exchange and Societal Benefit: Participation of beneficiaries in cultural, volunteer, or academic activities in the United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland, that promote cross-cultural understanding. Long-term Impact: Demonstrating how beneficiaries’ success stories inspire other under-resourced youth to pursue education. Is there any harm arising from any of the purposes? No harm Who are the charity's beneficiaries? The primary beneficiaries of 1Life Better are: 1. Under-resourced South African youth – specifically young people who face financial, social, or educational disadvantages that limit their access to higher education opportunities. 2. Individuals seeking international educational opportunities – youth who aspire to study in the United Kingdom but lack the necessary financial or mentoring support to do so. 3. Communities in South Africa – indirectly benefiting through the return of skilled, educated, and empowered young people who contribute to social, economic, and educational development locally. 4. The United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland – indirectly benefiting from the positive contributions, cultural exchange, and international collaboration of beneficiaries while they study and engage locally. Is there any private benefit flowing from any of the purposes? Any private benefit arising from the activities of 1Life Better is incidental and necessary in order to achieve the charity’s objects. Support for beneficiaries: Scholarships, financial assistance, mentoring, and training provided to individual under-resourced South African youth are necessary for them to access educational opportunities in the United Kingdom. While these individuals directly benefit, this benefit is incidental to the wider public benefit of relieving poverty, advancing education, and promoting skills development. No undue private gain: No individual or organisation receives benefits from 1Life Better that are unrelated to, or outside, its charitable purposes. All benefits are justified as essential to the delivery of the charity’s objectives for the public benefit.

What your organisation does

1Life Better has a vision to offer international education opportunities to talented but under resourced individuals. We focus on identifying suitable young South Africans to start a life changing post school qualification in excellent Northern Irish educational institutions. Our vision is to holistically journey with the recipient through tertiary

education, helping prepare the individual to become a contributing citizen. South Africa has one of the world's highest unemployment rates, with close to 40% adults without formal work. Shockingly, this increases to approximately 60% for youth aged 15-24. A major contributor to this problem is a lack of good quality post school education opportunities for those without financial means. 1Life Better wants to be a part of the solution, and thereby unlocking the deserving individual’s potential to overcome the scourge of poverty through excellent education. 1Life Better exists out of a deep passion for ensuring that access to higher education is not limited by a young person’s financial or social circumstances. We believe that every young person, regardless of their economic situation, deserves the chance to fulfil their potential. By providing scholarships, mentoring, and access to international study opportunities in the United Kingdom, we support under-resourced South African youth who would otherwise be denied these life-changing experiences.
