Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from the relief of poverty among families in the area are improved shelter, better nutrition and opportunities for education. The direct benefits which flow from advancement of health among families are increased prospects for education, work and reduction in disease, injuries and disabilities. Improved health

reduces the drain on poor families to pay for health care. The direct benefits which flow from relief of those in need by reason of ill-health, disability or financial hardship are improving the quality of life for children with disabilities and providing help and support to family members. Benefit from the relief of poverty can be measured by seeing families with improved housing and sleeping facilities where children are provided with clean clothes and mattresses. The benefit from advancement of health is seen when children have better school attendance; parents are able to find work and families have less debt. Benefits flowing from relief of those with ill-health or disabilities are measured by seeing those with disabilities being provided with suitable mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walking aids; by seeing children with special needs attending a suitable school and integrating with their community. The whole area benefits when families with a child dealing with special needs, have opportunities to mix with each other creating community spirit Members of the community including teachers and health staff, learn together that those with disabilities have much to offer and will bring much joy and laughter. Teams of volunteers are at risk of developing infectious diseases. These risks are minimised by making use of vaccinations, and preventive measures. The risks are outweighed by the positivity from seeing improved life for so many. The charity’s beneficiaries are all the families which are directly helped with finance and practical help. These families will then have increased opportunity to find employment and so improve their family’s prospects. The whole community benefits as there is a better understanding of those with special needs and children are learning that those with disabilities can be part of their school. Volunteers who have travelled to see the various projects in Nakasongola return with a sense of pride in helping those in difficult circumstances and they also realise that here in Northern Ireland we are blessed with the NHS, safe living conditions and good nutrition.
