Public benefits

The direct benefit that flows from MHASKC's charitable purposes of relieving those in need by reason of mental ill health through the provision of peer support and social inclusion activities include improved mental health and emotional wellbeing for beneficiaries. Around one in five adults show signs of mental health challenges such as anxiety or

depression in Northern Ireland according to the Northern Ireland Audit Office. While also reporting 7,983 people were waiting longer than the target 9-13 weeks to access mental health services in March 2022. In addition to this, the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action, reports chronic loneliness affects 1 in 20 people in Northern Ireland. By providing peer support, MHASKC provides a safe, understanding environment where individuals can share their experiences with others who face similar challenges, which can reduce feelings of loneliness, stigma and isolation. Additionally, in providing social inclusion activities such as coffee mornings, group walks and social outings, MHASKC offers informal opportunities for individuals experiencing mental ill health challenges to build friendships, connect with their communities and reduce social exclusion. Our benefits are identified by handing out feedback forms at the end of each peer support group and or social inclusion activity for beneficiaries to complete with a range of questions to evaluate how each beneficiary felt after the peer support group and or social inclusion activity and its impact on their wellbeing. This is then emailed to the charity a few days later, where the board and group facilitator will review and assess these to ensure MHASKC continues to facilitate beneficial and effective peer support groups and social inclusion activities that tailor to our beneficiaries needs. No harm arises from any of our purposes. However, precautions are taken nonetheless, for example we have in place a safeguarding policy that is regularly reviewed by trustees and all volunteers undergo safeguarding training. The charity's main beneficiaries will be adults over the age of 18 located in Northern Ireland, who are experiencing mental ill health such as depression, anxiety, low mood and or loneliness would benefit from peer support and social inclusion activities. There are no private benefits flowing from any of the organisations purposes.
