Public benefits
The public benefits that flow from the advancement of community development and the promotion of urban and rural development are: (i) the provision of an inclusive safe space for communities to come together and increase social interaction, contributing to community development by fostering a sense of community and reducing loneliness, resulting in
a safer, more stable, and cohesive community; (ii) the creation of employment, training, and work experience opportunities for residents living in economically and socially deprived areas, leading to a reduction in poverty, unemployment, and hardship, and consequently improving the quality of life for the beneficiaries, with associated enhancements in health and well-being; (iii) enhanced knowledge about setting up and running small businesses at markets, resulting in increased levels of self-employment and better prospects for sustainable development; (iv) increased levels of knowledge and transferable vocational skills among individuals, employees and trainees, contributing to the creation of a more educated, skilled community; (v) a greater sense among the beneficiaries of more fulfilled and purposeful lives, improved confidence and self-esteem, better physical and mental health, improved interpersonal skills and the development of positive relationships, an increased sense of well-being, improved community relations, and better employment opportunities; (vi) the promotion of local agriculture, horticulture, and sustainable food practices that benefit the climate, nature, and health; (vii) the support of the arts, artists, and traditional crafts, inspiring creativity and cultural expression, preserving heritage, and enriching the community’s cultural life. We can evidence these benefits through surveys, research, and records. Our documentation includes the number of jobs supported, opportunities offered, and the number of individuals who have successfully completed training courses. Additionally, we track those who have benefited from our mentorship and support programmes. Reports submitted to funding bodies, and research surveys within the local communities further validate the positive impact of our activities. No harm arises from any of these purposes. The beneficiaries of our organisation are people living in the area of benefit and those that use our services. Some private benefit is obtained by the owners of small businesses who trade at markets on favourable terms, and from local businesses that benefit from increased footfall from our activities but this is ancillary to the main purpose. Any private benefit is greatly outweighed by the gains in public benefit and is incidental in terms of enhanced community development opportunities, health and wellbeing, enhanced skills and knowledge and access to services and facilities to relieve poverty and isolation.
What your organisation does
Our organisation focuses on regenerating and developing economically, physically, and socially deprived areas in Northern Ireland, or supporting people living in those areas, particularly the Causeway Coast and Glens. We enhance community cohesion, economic stability, and personal development through: • Organising markets and events offering stalls
and spaces for local producers and businesses to showcase and sell goods at favourable rates, supporting local enterprise and access to locally produced items. • Creating spaces and activities to increase social interaction, reduce loneliness, and foster community stability. • Providing services, support, training, and mentorship to individuals and small businesses to start, develop, and sustain business, promoting sustainable development and positive mental health. • Advancing education, training, and retraining, especially for young people and those facing hardship, enhancing vocational skills and employability. • Relieving hardship, poverty, and unemployment through self-employment opportunities, training, and work experience through our social enterprise, improving overall wellbeing. • Promoting arts, culture, heritage, craft, and craftsmanship through events that enrich community life and support local artists. • Supporting local agriculture, horticulture, and sustainable food practices, encouraging the use of local food, , increasing the education around our local food production and healthy eating, reducing environmental impact and promoting community wellbeing.
