Public benefits

(a) Young people helped develop an education program around what they wanted to know about Suicide and Mental Health that has now been delivered in schools, sporting clubs, youth clubs, churches and businesses. People now have more knowledge around Suicide and Mental Health and it includes the NI context. (b) S.T.E.P.S. Mental Health has a strong

presence within the community, our classes and workshops take place in community buildings. Being visible in the community reduces stigma and our counselling service has a really good reputation as a safe, ethically run service with highly qualified counsellors and clinical supervisor. (c) People living in rural areas deserve the same right to access high quality services when they are needed. S.T.E.P.S. classes are always kept at a level that people can afford and exemptions are made for those that cant afford our classes. The counselling service is free subject to continued fundraising. When you are suffering from ill mental health cost should never be a factor in being able to access support. (d) When S.T.E.P.S. started in 2012 no one was talking about mental health and fewer making the connection between physical health and mental health. This has seen a noticeable improvement for example we used to have to run men only classes and now they are happy to mix. People are much more tuned in. (e) S.T.E.P.S. work in partnership with our GP, Pharmacy, CMHT, CAMHS, Schools, Youth club, Sporting organisations, Scouts, Glasgowbury, churches, other voluntary groups and businesses. (a) Through evaluating every workshop we know people gain knowledge, information and awareness around Suicide and Mental Health. They have a greater awareness of the many supports available. This approach has reduced stigma. (b) S.T.E.P.S. Mental Health have seen over 35,000 people through our classes and over 700 people through our counselling service from 48 different towns and villages ranging in age in females from 4-88 and in males from 4-78. (c) All S.T.E.P.S. Mental Health tutors and counsellors are local, proving that high quality services can be delivered in rural communities. S.T.E.P.S. classes are what the community have asked for and we offer flexibility as people living with ill mental health can at times struggle to come out. (d) S.T.E.P.S. work closely with our local GP and Pharmacy and have done a number of preventative health fayres. S.T.E.P.S. now run mixed classes (e) No duplication of services and joint projects for the benefit of the community S.T.E.P.S. Mental Health work and support vulnerable people who are at times actively suicidal. For that reason we ensure our team are highly qualified, experienced and follow policies, procedures and risk assessments. At S.T.E.P.S. all counsellors must attend monthly personal supervision and we offer group supervision as well. All processes are regularly reviewed to ensure the safety of everyone who uses our services. Anyone living in the Mid Ulster Council district can access our classes, workshops and counselling service. To date we have seen over 700 people from 48 different towns and villages ranging in age from 4-88. through the counselling service. S.T.E.P.S. caters for anyone living with ill mental health, those caring for someone with ill mental health and those bereaved through suicide.
