Public benefits

The primary benefits that flow from Conflict Textiles' purposes is greater awareness and interest in the experience of conflict and human rights abuses and a commitment to address these issues, both directly among participants in Conflict Textiles activities and those who access the website, and, indirectly, as a result of their subsequent

activities in their own spheres of influence. As a result there is greater awareness of the important contribution of textiles related to conflict as self-expression, testimony, memory, resistance, art, therapy and historical record. The effectiveness of Conflict Textiles work can be seen in participation in its activities; in numbers accessing the website; in invitations to curate exhibitions or speak at events. It can also be demonstrated in new textiles resulting from its activities, often by makers who have not had previous experience or interest. There is very little possibility of harm. The themes of exhibitions and other activities may bring to the surface memories and emotions from participants' past experiences but the activities of the Trust are designed to help participants acknowledge and manage such memories. Even though there is limited, and only occasional, activities that involved children, representatives of the Trust could become aware of the possibility of inappropriate behaviour taking place. They are familiar with the Trust's Child Protection Policy and know what action to take. Those who benefit are participants in the activities and users of the website and through them the wider society. The makers of the textiles receive no remuneration for their work, but benefit from having their work recognised in countries often far from their own. There is no private benefit flowing from any of the purposes. The Trust Secretary, who is not a trustee, receives a small salary, and those involved in Trust activities may be reimbursed for their expenses, but this is incidental and necessary in carrying out the Trust's purposes.

What your organisation does

Conflict Textiles makes the textiles in its collection available as widely as possible both locally and transnationally. It curates, with partners, exhibitions of textiles featuring the impact of conflict, human rights abuses and environmental degradation, together with associated activities including seminars, workshops and publications.

Conflict Textiles supports and encourages makers of textiles, researchers, academics, teachers and other interested people. It also maintains an on-line archive and data base of all textiles which have featured in activities from 2008, and is developing archival practice in relations to textiles of conflict. The trust also commissions short films on specific themes related to the exhibitions and other activities, and these are shown at events, and are also available on the Trust's website.
