Public benefits
1. The benefits that flow from Purpose 1 include an uplift in the clinical skills, academic and practical knowledge and professional confidence of veterinary surgeons. 2. The benefits that flow from Purpose 2 include veterinary input into policy that may impact on animal health and welfare and an uplift in public knowledge on issues around animal
health and welfare. 3. The benefits that flow from Purpose 3 include a greater awareness of signs of physical and mental stress and of how to address these signs. The benefits above can be demonstrated by feedback which is collected from our members and stakeholders. There is no harm arising from any of the purposes AVSPNI provides benefits primarily to veterinary surgeons based in Northern Ireland though its educational output is available to veterinary surgeons from elsewhere also. The only private benefits flowing from the charity’s purposes are to businesses contracted to deliver some or all of the services required in order to meet the charity’s purposes. These may include hotels and other venues, service providers (e.g. audio visual services, secretarial support services), printers and other necessary businesses as determined by the nature and location of each activity or event. These benefits are incidental and necessary because without them, the charity cannot deliver on its primary purposes.
What your organisation does
1. AVSPNI identifies and delivers continuing education events on topics of direct relevance to NI veterinary surgeons. Events may facilitate revision of existing knowledge, further develop existing knowledge, outline new approaches to disease and welfare issues, demonstrate new skills and techniques (medical/surgical) or address new and emerging
disease threats. Educational event for farm vets will be tailored to farming methods used within the NI agricultural sector. 2. AVSPNI engages with farming, governmental, charitable and other bodies, inputting veterinary advice where it may be beneficial to animal health and welfare. It responds to consultations, canvasses opinions from its members and experts from elsewhere to ensure its input reflects current thinking and evidence-based science. AVSPNI shares with its membership the knowledge gleaned through its engagement with other bodies so that they in turn can cascade knowledge out to their client base (the general pet and farm animal owning public). 3. AVSPNI delivers educational events and shares current knowledge on how to spot signs of stress, how to raise the topic with colleagues or clients under pressure and methods of combatting stress and anxiety. It promotes good physical and mental health amongst the veterinary profession via social media and encourages vets to share hints and tips more widely.
