Public benefits

The direct benefits from NDAHS purposes is the education of those living and working in the catchment area of the history associated with New Buildings and its growth from being a Plantation village governed by the Goldsmiths Company, one of the Livery Companies from London. The knowledge will be passed from grandparents right down to young

children who will ask questions about the area in which they live. The society will also learn from the local inhabitants who recollect their memories as these questions are to be answered. The society holds membership with the Federation for Ulster Local Studies, Federation of Local History Society in the Republic of Ireland. We participate in history workshops with the Derry City and Strabane District Council and have participated in cross border activities led by Derry City and Strabane District Council and the Nerve Centre in the City. These are demonstrated in the monthly talks of NDAHS which are held in the local community centre. These are attended by members who have a strong knowledge and interest in the history of the village. Some members do not live in the village but have an affinity with it as they have grown up there but have made elsewhere in the City their permanent home. The society has published two books on the local area and these have been widely welcomed by the local population and afar. The society holds a lot of photographs of the area and has an oral record of interviews carried out over the years. The society has published two books on the local area. We have also had two archaeological digs, firstly unearthing a souterrain and secondly a rath. This created great excitement within the village and in the local papers. We do not feel that our purposes would lead to any harm to the members or local population. The beneficiaries are the membership, the executive committee, the local population and the speakers who are invited to speak to the membership at monthly meetings. Other historical societies will benefit from our expertise and sharing of knowledge and networking. This includes the general public in the area and those who have since moved away and are keen to learn about the lives of their ancestry. There are no private benefits flowing from NDAHS purpose. A nominal fee is paid for membership. This fund is used to pay for speakers talks and their incidental travel. There is also a nominal rent paid to the Community Centre for use of their facilities.
