Public benefits
The direct benefit flowing from protecting native red squirrels and their habitat is that it helps maintain ecological balance in our forests. The direct benefit from monitoring and studying the native red squirrels and their habitats is that we contribute to a more complete understanding of the current and future state of the red squirrel
population in Mid Ulster and on the island of Ireland as a whole. The direct benefit of encouraging the under-threat red squirrel population to grow within the group's operational area is that it will help maintain ecological balance in our forests. The direct benefit of educating and working alongside community, civil, educational or government organisations that may impact positively or negatively on our ability to carry out our other purposes is a co-ordinated, efficient effort. The benefits will be evidenced through surveying the future state of the red squirrel population against the current state. There is no harm likely to flow from our purposes other than potential for adverse publicity around the group's support for the need to cull invasive grey squirrels in order to protect the red squirrel and its habitat. We believe this risk is far outweighed by the benefits flowing from our purposes and the fact that we continue to educate the public on why such action is required only serves to minimise this risk. The primary beneficiaries are the under threat native red squirrel squirrel population, which is a protected species. The other beneficiaries are the general population and future generations as our purpose has a positive ecological impact on our environment. The is no private benefit flowing from any of the purposes.
What your organisation does
We monitor and study red squirrels in the field using unobtrusive infrared camera technology. The data is shared with associated government bodies and environmental and conservation groups. It is used to better understand the distribution and relative health of the red squirrel population. This in turn helps inform environmental and commercial
decisions that may impact the red squirrel population. We raise public and community awareness of the threat to the native red squirrel and educate them about positive interventions that can be taken to protect habitat and create an environment conducive to sustainable growth of the red squirrel population. We do this through a range of activities and media including: social media, print literature, public information sessions and educational programs.
