Public benefits
The direct benefits flowing from purpose 1 include: Improved early educational experiences and preparation for transition to primary school for children in the Carn Tóchair and wider community; Children will develop a basic understanding of the Irish language which will facilitate their eventual progression to a Bunscoil and ultimately bilingualism
and they will also gain an understanding in the difference in phonetics between the English language and the Irish language which is most easily grasped at this age. The direct benefits flowing from purpose 2 include: Increased appreciation and knowledge of the Irish language among the preschool children attending the Naíscoil together with their families, in particular parents with no prior knowledge of the Irish language benefit from an introduction to the language; Protection of the Irish language, a language that has been listed as critically endangered by UNESCO; More use of the Irish language, greater interest from local children and in turn families and overall increased respect for the language and culture. The direct benefits flowing from purpose 3 include: An appropriate safe and supportive play environment will be created for the benefit of all the children; The facilities will provide parents an opportunity to meet with each other which will reduce isolation that parents can feel. The direct benefits flowing from purpose 4 include: We will better understand the needs of the children and their families so that we can continually improve our approach to their education; In particular families who wish to raise their children through Irish language. The direct benefits flowing from purpose 5 include: Providing the best education possible for all the children in our care by meeting the standards of the bodies under which we operate; Establishing relationships and links with other like-minded people and groups creating a network of support and a mechanism for ongoing development. These benefits can be demonstrated by the numbers attending the Naíscoil, feedback from beneficiaries/parents/carers and also through independent reviews by external bodies; the Early Years team of the Northern Health and Social Care Trust and the Education and Training Inspectorate of the Department of Education NI. The advantages of bilingual education are widely documented and evidenced through numerous research studies and literature. There are no identifiable elements of harm or risk arising from any of our purposes. Our beneficiaries are children attending the preschool setting and their families, the Irish language community in the Carn Tóchair area and the volunteers on the committee and those who help with fundraising and other events. The Naíscoil employs a minimum of two members of staff per academic year who are paid and who will develop their own skills further by working in this environment but this is incidental and necessary to the achievements of the Naíscoil's objectives.
What your organisation does
The Naíscoil provides pre-school education through the medium of Irish to children five mornings each week during term time. It adheres to the pre-school curriculum as set out by the Department of Education. We also offer occasionally cultural and fundraising activities that involve parents and families as well as engaging volunteers within the
community.
