Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from our purposes are: 1. Assistance to approximately 340 widows, the majority of whom are over pension age, by means of an annual financial payment (currently £50). This provides relief to those in need by way of age and financial hardship, and helps relieve or prevent poverty. 2. The provision of a bereavement

payment will prevent a qualifying widow from suffering financial hardship in the immediate period following the death of her husband. A widow may also benefit from advice on possible entitlement to any State benefits and grants. 3. Grants to other Masonic or non-Masonic registered charities will assist them to advance their charitable objectives. Benefits flowing from our purposes can be demonstrated as follows: 1. Annual reports will show the number of widows assisted by way of annual financial payments and bereavement grants. 2. Letters of thanks received from widows will be retained. 3. Records will be kept of widows assisted in the claiming of State Benefits and grants, and the outcome of any applications. 3. The rationale for grants to other Masonic charities will be documented. Such grants will appear in the accounts of the recipients. Acknowledgements and letters of thanks will be retained. There is no identifiable harm flowing from our purposes. The charity's beneficiaries are widows of Freemasons who were members of lodges under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Armagh. There are currently approximately 340 widows who benefit. The majority are over the age of 60. The Widows' Gift Scheme therefore provides benefit to an identifiable section of the public. Other Masonic registered charities have purposes and powers which extend to the wider public and community. Grants to those charities will assist them in meeting their objectives. There is no private benefit to anyone. All work undertaken on behalf of the Widows’ Gift Scheme is done voluntarily by members of the Masonic Order.

What your organisation does

In order to achieve the purpose set out above the Scheme has the following powers: 1. To pay an annual financial gift to all qualifying widows. This gift shall be paid in the month of December each year. The amount of the financial gift shall be decided by the Management Committee of the Scheme. 2. To make a bereavement payment to prevent a

qualifying widow from suffering financial hardship in the immediate period following the death of her husband. The amount of such payment will be decided by the Management Committee and will depend on the individual financial circumstances of the qualifying widow. 3. To pay financial grants to the Richardson Memorial Charity Fund or any other Masonic charitable institution as the Provincial Grand Lodge of Armagh shall decide. Such charities will be registered with the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland or the Charities Regulatory Authority in the Republic of Ireland.
