Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of improving community development are increased participation in community development in the area. we support al lmembers of the community to become involved in the development of their local community which gives them a sense of ownership and belonging. We give our members opportunities to be
fully involved in self-help programmes which improve mental health outcomes. These activities ensure that the health and wellbeing needs of all our members are supported. There has also been an increase in the benefits of our work in the wider community. We assess the benefits of all our activities using methods of community development evaluation e.g. regular feedback sessions on all our projects. we undertake a yearly survey whcih feeds into our annual report. We also record the numbers of people participating on our projects, record performance achieved and the quality of the activities. No work or function which would result in harm would ever knowingly be undertaken. The beneficiaries are men in the Portadown area and the wider community. There is no private benefit apart from improvement in confidence self esteem for the individuals flows from the purposes.
What your organisation does
The Men's Shed is primarily targeted at pensioners and unemployed men with time on their hands but generally with little or no spare disposable income. There is growing awareness and concern about the burden of ill health experienced by men in Northern Ireland. Most men are reluctant to talk about their emotions and that means that they usually
don’t ask for help. Probably because of this some men experience poor health, they drink more, take more risks and they suffer more from isolation, loneliness and depression. This status has been exacerbated over the last 2 years due to the pandemic which has greatly restricted our opening and availability. Good health is based on many factors including feeling good about yourself, being productive and valuable to your community, connecting to friends and maintaining an active body and an active mind. Becoming a member of a Community Men’s Shed gives a man that safe and busy environment where he can find many of these things in an atmosphere of friendship and, importantly, there is no pressure. Portadown Men's Shed focuses on providing a safe and relaxed environment for local men to come together to exchange ideas, develop positive social relationships and create a sense of belonging. It provides an opportunity for men to work on meaningful projects, arts and crafts, gardening activities, community projects, projects of their choice in their own time or to simply hang out, talk and find companionship and emotional support and a cuppa if that’s all they’re looking for. The Shed is located within the Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Council owned Secret Garden complex at Eden Villas, Edenderry, Portadown and provides mutual benefit to both organisations. The Shed at Eden Villas is currently open mid week but is available throughout the week as required. The members also meet in town on Monday evenings for planning administration and for other activities such as art projects.
