The direct benefits which flow from purpose 1 include a) recognition of the needs and barriers to accessing support for mental ill health in people from the BAME community resulting in improved recognition of mental distress and ill health and helping people access appropriate support b) providing culturally sensitive treatments and support
resulting in improved mental health and well being for individuals and communities. c) improved access to counsellors and psychological therapists, many of whom are bilingual and all of whom have expertise in working with BAME communities, have awareness of cultural sensitivities and are trained to work with interpreters. All therapists are members of a recognised professional body and undergo regular supervision ensuring a high standard of care. Beneficiaries may self-refer or be referred from the statutory or voluntary sector improving access. d) CANS provides beneficiaries a culturally sensitive service with an awareness and understanding of challenges which affect the BAME community in NI and Ireland. e) improved mental health and wellbeing, improved outcomes in anxiety, depression, symptoms due to trauma and other causes of mental ill health resulting in improved quality of life, integration and achieving one’s full potential. The direct benefits which flow from purpose 2 include a) placement of student counsellors and therapists, and training and ongoing supervision in EMDR trauma therapy improve knowledge and skills for therapists b) Raising awareness of mental wellbeing through workshops tailormade for the BAME community benefits individuals and communities to maintain good mental health and recognise and know how manage mental ill health, including accessing appropriate services. a) The benefits which flow from purpose 1 are demonstrated by the demand for our service, our very low non attendance rate, and patient testimony. b) Benefit from therapy is evidenced by good record keeping, including evidence of improvement using validated scores on mental illness and wellbeing at start and end of treatment. Evidence of benefit which flow from purpose 2 is obtained by feedback from workshops which is currently being undertaken and will continue to be obtained with each training and workshop No harms have been identified to date. Counsellors and therapists undergo regular supervision and there is a complaints procedure. Beneficiaries are people from Black and Minority Ethnic communities in Northern Ireland There is no private benefit to any individual
What your organisation does
Counselling All Nations Services (CANS) supports and promotes the mental health and well being of its beneficiaries by providing cultural appropriate counselling and psychological therapies delivered by fully accredited and supervised counsellors and therapists who work with trained interpreters as required by beneficiaries. Beneficiaries can be
referred through the statutory sector and voluntary organisations. CANS provides education and training through mental health awareness workshops, training for interpreters working in the field of counselling and for people in the statutory and voluntary sectors about the mental health needs of BAME communities.
