Public benefits

The direct public benefits arising from the charity’s purposes are the advancement of education and the advancement of health. In keeping with the legacies of Charles William Young and Ronnie McMullan, the charity supports both postgraduate research and the professional development of pre-registration pharmacists. The fund promotes and increases

both individual and collective knowledge and understanding of pharmacy and its contribution to healthcare for the benefit of the general public and future generations. This is achieved through the provision of bursaries, scholarships, allowances and research support to individuals undertaking postgraduate study, research projects or pre-registration professional development in pharmacy. Through this support, knowledge and skills within the pharmacy profession are enhanced and shared across the wider healthcare sector. Research findings and professional learning contribute to improved understanding of medicines, healthcare practice and patient safety, ultimately benefiting the health and wellbeing of the wider community. The benefits are demonstrated through reporting of activities and funding in the Annual Report laid before the Northern Ireland Assembly, through reporting at Annual General Meetings, and through feedback from beneficiaries on how the funding supported their education, training or research. Research findings and learning are also shared with the profession where appropriate. There is no harm arising from the purposes of the charity. The primary beneficiaries are those receiving bursaries, scholarships or research support to advance their education, training or research in pharmacy. However, the wider public benefits from the enhanced knowledge, professional development and research outcomes that contribute to improved healthcare and health outcomes for the population. Any private benefit arising from the charity’s activities is incidental. For example, an individual undertaking research or professional development may improve their career prospects through the knowledge and experience gained.

What your organisation does

The C W Young / R McMullan Charitable Trust was established in memory of Charles William Young, Head of Department of Pharmacy at Belfast College of Technology from 1929–1960, and Ronnie McMullan, former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland. Charles was a passionate educator who was committed to supporting postgraduate study

and the advancement of research in pharmacy, while Ronnie was widely respected for his dedication to encouraging and supporting pre-registration pharmacists in the early stages of their professional careers. Reflecting the shared commitment of both men to pharmacy education and professional development, the remit of the fund is to promote and advance the development of pharmacy for the public benefit in Northern Ireland by supporting education, the acquisition of knowledge and the furtherance of research. This is achieved through the award of scholarships, bursaries or maintenance allowances to enable individuals to advance their study and knowledge of pharmacy through research, postgraduate study or support during pre-registration training, as determined by the Trustees. In doing so, the Trust supports the development of skilled pharmacy professionals and thereby advances health and wellbeing for the benefit of the wider community.
