Public benefits

The direct benefits that flow from our Society's purpose are the increased awareness among the general public and in particular among those supporters of the history society in the historical development of the local area and the factors that helped make it what it is at present. An increased knowledge and increased interest in the history, folk

life, archaeology and antiquities of the Lisnaskea area and its environs and the broader historical aspect of County Fermanagh and Northern Ireland. Provision of talks/events to increase local pride in their area, help in the development of tourism and encourage people to interact more with other members of the community irrespective of background, in exploring the past and assessing its contributions to the present. Any disagreements about interpretations of the past are accepted as part of the challenge of history and are accepted as inherent in understanding our shared history. To help develop skills among a section of the population in researching the past and transferring those skills to everyday life today. This is demonstrated by the longevity of this society now being 29 years in existence and the increase in attendance of members of the public at monthly talks/activities of the history society and is supported by the cross community nature of its membership. Members give of their time voluntarily. The society charges a nominal membership fee for talks/events which helps offset the financial costs in running its activities and sustaining the annual programme of the society. The public benefits that flow from any presentations, research or publication of any articles of local interest raises local and community awareness of their heritage and traditions and encourages others to engage in a similar process by helping local people both in the society and outside, to develop their expertise and skill levels. There is no potential harm from our declared purposes. The beneficiaries are the members of the society and the general public who attain an increased awareness of the varieties of traditions that go to make up the present and gain knowledge of the experiences of people in former generations in surmounting difficulties and problems. The beneficiaries are the general public, (predominantly being elderly people and 7-13 year olds but not exclusive to these). It does not appear that there would be any private benefit except the incidental development of awareness and skills. There is no private benefit from the activities of the society and no payments are made to members for their help with the programme of events (excepting any incidental benefits). Outside lecturers and helpers are provided with an agreed fee to help offset expenses incurred. Some individuals will help develop expertise and skills that can be transferable to other positions and occupations but that is an incidental benefit.

The Society will promote and carry out or assist in carrying out research and surveys and investigations and publish the useful results thereof. The Society will also organise trips (at least once, maybe twice a year) to other places of interest, which will broaden the vision of life in Northern Ireland.
