Public benefits
Purpose 1: to educate the public in the dramatic and operatic arts. Direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the development of appreciation of dramatic and musical arts and increased engagement and promotion of public understanding. This is demonstrated by the numbers attending performances by Portadown Phoenix Players annually; full
houses in Portadown Town Hall. We do not believe that any harm will arise from this purpose. Purpose 2: to promote dramatic works and musical productions. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the improvement of understanding, knowledge and skills of participating in all aspects of dramatic and/or musical performances. The possibility of harm, for example by physical injury incurred while participating in musical performance, dance, movement and theatre, is outweighed by the benefit and significantly reduced by the policies and procedures in place to address such risks, for example safeguarding and child protection and health and safety policies. The benefits are demonstrated by the numbers participating in each production, the numbers participation in workshops in drama, dance, set/costume/make-up and the audiences who attend productions. As detailed above, we believe that any harm which might arise (for example by physical injury) is far outweighed by the benefit and significantly reduced by those policies and procedures in place to address such risks. Beneficiaries are those members of the adult and junior groups of the Society who participate in one or more aspects of the preparation for and performance of dramatic and/or musical productions. Other beneficiaries are those members of the public who attend and enjoy aforementioned performances. The only private benefit flowing from the purposes would arise should the Executive Committee decide to engage the services of a professional director, musical director and/or choreographer. Should this arise, any private benefit would be incidental and necessary.
What your organisation does
The Society aims to advance education and to promote the dramatic and operatic arts to the benefit of the public of the Armada, Banbridge and Craigavon Council area by promoting participation in the performing arts by adults and young people. By so doing, the Society proposes to educate the public in the dramatic and operatic arts and to further
the development of public appreciation and taste in said arts. Portadown Phoenix Players advances its purposes of “educating the public in the dramatic and operatic arts” and “furthering the development of public appreciation and taste in the said arts” by organising at least one musical and one dramatic production each year staged over several nights, and by participating in amateur drama festivals locally using programmes and programme material to enhance the audience experience and by promoting participation in the performing arts by adults and young people. Meetings to decide on productions, where possible choosing challenging and less frequently performed material, and to develop these to the point of performance, take place throughout the year, working with director, m.d., choreographer and costume/lighting/stage crew. Workshops with experienced performers allow skills to be developed in performance, stagecraft, costume and set design and preparation, and make up. Such participation contributes to members’ personal development and allows self-esteem and confidence to be nurtured. Members in the past have progressed to professional work in stage, television, dance, musical performance and musical theatre.
